A clever and very funny black comedy about a man suddenly confronted by a woman he swore undying love to 24 years earlier - who has come to upset his idyllic homelife by forcing him to be faithful to such youthful promises. The back-and-forth chronology works really well here, so that scenes are replayed after you get a glimpse of what has gone on either immediately preceding or immediately after, which changes things enormously.
PS Fun Fact: the credits list for the premiere UK production lists one 'Robert Pattinson' as playing the role of the son, Andi - but all the reviews say it was played by Tom Riley - apparently Pattinson had to drop out due to his film career taking off...
I was made to read this for a university assignment. It's not often that a school recommends a book or play that's actually good, but I enjoyed reading this one. I read it some years ago, and I still think about it often. The play is about a man who's been married for over two decades. He has a teenaged son. He and his family are packing up to move when a woman, who he hasn't seen since before his marriage, knocks on his door and claims to be the love of his life. Obviously, the wife doesn't like this at all and tells her to leave. She refuses, claiming that the man still loves her, and they should be together. The play is a soap drama until the end. The end is a horror. Would recommend.
