I loved this extremely long book! Mostly because the author was very good at stating the facts from history. He didn't put in much opinion or any fictional stories, just facts & history. But he did it in a way that was super easy to read. And that made this book worth reading. There was nothing dry about his style - in fact he seems to have a slight wry sense of humor that made it more appealing. I appreciated the truth of history in such a light manner.
The author did a great job writing church history and adding in a lot of little known stories. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn church history. His notes and appendixes are longer than the actual book but there is some great stuff in those too. I will use them for future references.
This was supposed to be volume 1 of a series. It ends with the Mormons leaving for Ohio. That said much is left out. The book is very thorough but that works against it as it tends to trail away from the main narrative to inform the reader of many details pertaining to the Mormon faith. It is interesting, but the disappointment in the lack of the finality of the story is difficult to reconcile.
Many interesting insights. Perhaps the best parts are the appendices examining the great apostasy and reformation. Sometimes writing style too opinionated or sensational, but author really did his homework.
