Nashville may be located in the country music capital of the world ... but local hockey fans know it simply as "Smashville." The Nashville Predators adopted their name from the bones of a saber-toothed tiger found beneath a local building. Craig Leipold first purchased the expansion rights in 1997, and the team quickly built a loyal following. It won 28 games in the inaugural season. Twelve seasons later, the team finished second in the Central Division and appeared in its first-ever conference semifinals. One year later, it finally dispatched its long-standing rival Detroit Red Wings 4-1 in the opening round of the playoffs. Author and award-winning reporter Justin Bradford details the fascinating history through unique player anecdotes and perspectives from those involved in the team's rise to prominence.
This book is a great history of Nashville Predators hockey. Whether you have been with this team since the beginning or are just coming around to the sport, this book is worth your time.
Short and sweet, reads like a collection of interviews (kind of what it is), so like, an oral history of the Preds? This, I bet, is for sale in the gift shop @ Bridgestone. A great introduction, but not much more than that, and a little tiresome due to some stylistic choices, like correcting sports guys' grammar and using too many italics. I mean, there are only so many italics one can see in the course of a book, yes? I am right in thinking that, Kappelmeister? Anyway, for a kid doing a report or a rabid, die-hard Preds fan, yes. For someone looking for a deep history of the formation of the team? No.
I'm definitely biased since Justin and I have been friends since college, but I thought he did a great job sharing an overview of the Predators history! He covered many details and talked to a good number of past and present Predators affiliates (coaches, players, etc), but the book wasn't overwhelming or difficult to follow, even for someone like me with minimal knowledge. Plus, it was a very quick read. Great job, Justin!
