Rima Lunin Schultz and Adele Hast co-edit (with four more associate editors) a biographical dictionary of 423 women in Chicago history. Selection criteria required that biographical figures were deceased before 1990 (as it was the year research began). The book also includes a 60-page introduction essay (a historical overview of women in Chicago history), a list of entries organized by birth year, an index of contributors, and an alphabetical subject index too. The subject index includes subject names, subject topics, and culture groups represented. Each entry includes a list of sources for further information. While some readers will be frustrated that a second volume has not yet been produced, for readers seeking a comprehensive resource for identifying early women in Chicago history this is an accessible, impressive, informative, must-own resource.
