The liability of nearly all kinds of timber in common use to rapid decay, when exposed to alternate wet and dry, or when placed in damp and badly ventilated situations, has led to various devices for the purpose of increasing its durability under such circumstances. A late English publication con tains a list of forty-seven patents that have been taken out for preserving animal and vegetable substances, including tim ber the earliest is in the year 1737, and the latest in 1849, all but four being within the present century.
