Image Processing and GIS for Remote Sensing: Techniques and Applications

Rate this book
"Image Processing and GIS for Remote Sensing" 2e has been completely revised and updated to take account of the latest developments in this fast moving field. The book maintains its focus of being an accessible overview of the subject and successfully draws together these three key areas in a balanced and comprehensive manner. This book pinpoints the overlap between the individual subjects, providing a summary of essential techniques and a selection of key case studies in a variety of application areas. The book conveys in-depth knowledge of image processing and GIS in an accessible manner, with clear explanations and conceptual illustrations used throughout to enhance student understanding. The understanding of key concepts is emphasised throughout with minimal assumption of prior mathematical experience.- Comprehensive coverage of new image processing techniques such as BCET, DDS and SFIM- Includes case studies based on experience in industry projects using high level image processing and GIS- Emphasis on easy to understand terminology with clear explanations and conceptual illustrations throughout to enhance student understanding- Focus on earth science applications- Extended coverage of essential mathematics for use by course tutors and lecturers highlighted throughoutThe major changes in contents are listed as 1. A chapter of subpixel image analysis technology (new Chapter 11) will be added in Part Image Processing. This is largely based on authors' research work in the last 6 years, which represents state-of-art of a new branch of image processing for extracting information from remotely sensed imagery data and has becoming very widely used in the last 3 years.2. The GIS chapters will be updated - small changes and updates throughout. Considerable changes to data structures, models and schemas. 3. Chapter 21 Research Case Studies has been intensively revised with new case studies to replace the old ones to reflect the current status of research applications. The cased Landslide hazard assessment in the three gorges area of the Yangtze river using ASTER Wushan-Badong-Zigui (Section 21.2) will be removed and a more resent new case study will be GIS modelling of earthquake damage zones using satellite remote sensing and DEM Wenchuan earthquake.4. We hope to update/modify the first industrial case study (in Greenland) and replace the second one with a case using VHR data (pending permission to use the information)Online Beside the content change, the authors will also focus on the development of an online version of the book which is more interactive. Here they consider two i) the online version must not depend on any specific software; ii) the online version should not reduce the demand for the hard copies of the book. The authors will therefore aim to develop the online version as a digitally illustrated reference book rather than providing full text. This is likely to be achieved using .ppt/pdf documents that they use in their teaching, which highlight the key points, along with high quality graphical illustrations and (copyright-free) digital example images (tiff or jpg2000). Such an online version can then be freely accessible to tempt the potential readers to the buy the book. On the other hand, the .ppt style online illustration book can be used as viewgraph materials in teaching by lecturers as well as for students to revise key concepts of the course. This could be developed either as a sophisticated accompanying website or we should work with the authors to develop a more enhanced e-version of the print edition.
