Thriving! Triumph over Trauma

Rate this book
With compassion, humor, experience and enthusiasm, Dr. Connie Stapleton takes the reader on the journey from obesity to weight loss surgery (WLS) and its "after life." The first book of its kind, Thriving! combines weight loss information with moving stories of real-life WLS patients who share their life-long struggles and triumphs. It is possible to overcome childhood traumas and other factors that contribute to obesity and reclaim both health and happiness--and keep the weight off. Thriving! makes it clear that weight loss is about more than eating right, exercising and surgery. It will guide you in your quest to live fully, as the person you were meant to be. Find out how you can do so much more, and thrive, not merely survive.

Meh. I didn't care for the author's writing at all. In fact, she irritated the hell out of me. Fortunately, the division between her commentary and the first-person stories is very clear so it's easy to decide whether or not to read her fluff.

The personal stories were interesting (and make up about 50% of the book). I would have preferred that more of them include their highest weights, weight before surgery, and type of surgery... but suspect the omissions were intentional, in order to focus the stories on the journey rather than the specifics.

Being that I'm headstrong, self confident, and don't have a trace of inferiority complex, it was a bit too condescending for my tastes and there were only 3 stories which struck a chord with me.

That said, I think this would be a very good resource for many people considering weight loss surgery - especially anyone who's got low self esteem or inferiority issues based on their obesity.
