Ο Ντόναλντ Νίκολ είναι ένας ιστορικός ο οποίος διαθέτει λογοτεχνικό χάρισμα στη γραφή του. Αυτό κάνει τα βιβλία του να μοιάζουν με ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα και να μην έχει την αίσθηση ο αναγνώστης ότι διαβάζει Ιστορία. Ειδικά στο συγκεκριμένο περιμένει κανείς με αγωνία να δει τι θα γίνει στο τέλος με τη Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορία-αν και ξέρει φυσικά την κατάληξη!- σαν να παρακολουθεί ταινία! Η ιστορική έρευνα φυσικά είναι, όπως πάντα εξαιρετική.

For the history lovers and who consider himself/herself ignorant to Byzantine Empire should definitely read Nicol's work. Easy to read and quite clear about the events that led the Empire in a devastating last two centuries after the Latin Sack of 1204. In addition the author do not talk with out dated implications. Even though the Ottoman parts are covered superficially it doesn't harm the essence of the book.
