WIPO was created in 1967 "to encourage creative activity, to promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world."
WIPO currently has 189 member states, administers 26 international treaties, and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The current Director-General of WIPO is Francis Gurry, who took office on October 1, 2008. 186 of the UN Members as well as the Cook Islands, Holy See and Niue are Members of WIPO. Non-members are the states of Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Solomon Islands, South Sudan and East Timor. The Palestinians have observer status.

A World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) brochure about collective management for copyright and some forms of related rights.
The brochure starts by providing a simplified introduction to copyright and related rights,and the then the notion of collective management organizations. They help copyright holders to collect their royalties resulting from endless forms and cases of the legitimate use of their works. This collection happens in exchange of membership and some administrative fees.
It then explains the types of collective management available per each of the works covered by copyright and related rights protection,namely, musical works, dramatic works, printed works and visual arts.
Socio - economic and cultural dimension are then presented,where collective management organizations usually deducts a percentage of royalties.
