The spine-tingling prequel to the post-apocalyptic Ruin Saga
Awkward Manhattan bookseller Jack Shannon suddenly has his world turned upside down, when an inter-dimensional Scotsman appears from nowhere, blowing his bookstore sky-high. Kidnapped by the seemingly insane Scot-but-not, Jack is hurled into a hidden world behind the world. As mysterious powers and the call of destiny awaken within him, he is thrust into a race to save the world.
Somewhere in the city lurks a suave, immaculate young professional. Under that beautiful exterior lurks a vicious, primal creature from the shadows of All Where, a servant of the Angelic One. After decades hiding in this world, his trap is finally set.
I am not going to rehearse an outline of the story - I couldn't even if I wanted to do so and enough is given in the synopsis to start the wild ride. Indeed, I don't quite know how to even review this book other than by getting very personal. So here goes. I don't enjoy most fantasy stories with a few exceptions (Name of the Wind, for one) being much more of a science fiction fan but this is fantasy that sweeps me away. Nor am I really into morasses of blood and severed limbs, and there is a morass of both in the Ruin saga, of which this is part. Come to think of it, I'm not really into horror. But none of this counts one iota when I read Harry Manner's quite stunning series. There is for me at least, something quite hypnotic in his writing, visceral, exuberant, pulling me in ever faster, ever deeper to his terrible, unbelievable but absolutely tactile dream world of the destruction of our mundane being. Frost is no exception. And it's humerous, too. I don't know how he does it and I don't care. Lost in Mr.Manner's swirling imagination I just delight in it and feel lost at being dumped back in the here and now when that last page is turned, finding myself longing for the next delicious installment. Try it for yourself - I dare you.
Again another winner by [Harry Manners]. In [Frost] [Manner's] gives the backstory for the [Ruin Saga] and one of the main characters. It is fast paced and well written as all of [Manners] works and I highly recommend anything he writes.
Read the first book in the Ruin Saga, Ruin. 2 Stars: written well with nice flow, but it never interested me and I dislike all the characters, therefore will not continue with the series.
