Something weird is happening: the moon is lopsided, with a bluish glow along one edge. When Kayla Kane finds a magic stone, Morath (one of three wyrd sisters) drags her off to Elsewhen, armed only with a jar of Glamour Remover and A Guide to the Old Ones or Little Folk. As the reluctant keeper of the stone, Kayla must discover the secret of why magic and technology are combining, bringing When and Elsewhen closer together. She is aided by an eighteenth-century Cockney, a cryptic Anglo-Saxon, a messy piskie, and other eccentric characters. But will she be too late to save both worlds?
I studied Russian and comparative literature and have been a freelance editor for many years. My most recent humorous fantasy is Hexed in Texas, in which the Russian witch Baba Yaga and the granddaughter of Marie Laveau compete for a rare item released by a magic leak in San Antonio. I spend most of my time writing, reviewing, and working on my website, Burford's Fantasy Odditorium (www.kathyburford.com), with excerpts from my books, reviews, and oddities in fact and fiction. After living in Texas for many years, my husband and I now live in my hometown, Iowa City.
I really enjoy Kathy Burford's humorous style of fantasy. My favorite was Hexed in Texas. Elsewhen was a bit weaker than her other books, but still way better than most fantasy writers (except me, of course).
A spunky young girl finds a magic stone and is transported to another world (Elsewhen) by Morath, one of three powerful wyrd sisters, on a quest to save both When (our world) and Elsewhen. Among the many notable encounters with oddball characters on her quest, and one of my favorites, is a very funny confrontation with the famous witch Baba Yaga of Russian folklore. This is an entertaining and well-crafted story. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of Burford's works. A humorous fantasy for all ages.
If this book is to be recommended for children the part in the beginning about the occult needs to be taken out. Other than that it is quite suitable for children. They would love something like this. It starts out slowly, but once the middle is reached it gets exciting. Also, the author is quite knowledgeable about a number of things, including chemistry. In addition, she writes a compelling chapter where the heroine is all alone.
