As perhaps I should have expected from the title, this is a pretty bleak novella featuring bleak people living bleak lives. From the beginning I did not like Peter, the main character, with his fear of the woods. The real monsters don't live in the woods. They live in our cities. SPOILER - In the end it is revealed that Peter himself has become one of the real monsters which inhabit our world. The novella is well written. If you like bleak stories with bleak endings you may like this. I didn't.

Mr. Bleaker is a great and fast-paced read that I thoroughly enjoyed. It chugs along at a pleasant pace and is not smothered from the opening page in blood and gore - which I think is what makes it something of a lone wolf. The characters are fun, believable, and made me reflect on my own childhood - which is the most important part of writing or reading, I believe - allowing ourselves to be lead onto a reminiscent path that we can relate to. It's got a lovely little twist at the end that I didn't see coming and the first in a trilogy, I believe. I have no idea how the author intends to carry this into a series - but I'm looking forward to finding out.

Well Done

An excellent bLend of childhood fears, the suggestion there is some truth to them, and hints, that perhaps the narrator is not quite as harmless as he seems, keeps readers intrigued until the very end.

A great, realistic voice perfect for the character; both natural and oddly lacsidasiacal. "Breast cancer spread to her lungs, and then just to be sure, it set into her bones."

This everyday, realistic, and somewhat flat voice enhances the scary stuff, and characterizes the narrator as both cynical, and accepting of his fate.

Looking forward to reading books two and three.

Very well written

A really good, quick read. I was expecting more of a horror story, but I don't regret being wrong. Very strong character developments, the story line is brilliant. This book immediately sucked me in and I finished it in one sitting. I will definitely be continuing this series and I'm very excited to get the next one. My only gripe is that I wish it was a little longer, and the timeline seemed to jump a lot with little warning.

Good storyline

The only reason that I only gave this book four stars was that there were several errors. Otherwise, this book was a great read. I'll definitely be reading the entire series.

Seems like it could be a chilling little horror delight ... if the writer could fix the fluctuating verb tenses!
