From the book's cover: West Virginia, 1960 A mine owner. An elegant lady. Seductive voices that scoff at trust.
Sweet Christian Historical Romance set in the early 1950's. It continues the story of Robby and Julie, who are now married. The story of Julie's father continues as well. Issues of trust are all through the book. Julie's father learns he can trust his managers to run his coal mines while he visits the College town.
Enriching story of Julie and Robbie graduating from college and getting jobs - while Robby goes on to graduate school. Robby was part of a large family of a coal miner and was able to get away and live a different life. He also brings his sister Adriana (after she graduates high school) to live with them in College town. Adriana is newly away from home at her first job and has to learn how to act and who to trust at work. This leads to serious lessons in what lack of love in family life can lead to.
Julie's father spends more time with the Dean of Women from the college - who had a bad experience as a young girl and is having trouble trusting another man. Strong faith and learning to pray and trust God come into play all throughout the story. An excellent way to spend your time, and you feel good after you've read it!
I was graciously given a copy of this book by the Author and have written my honest opinion. I feel blessed to have been chosen to read and write a review.
"Trust Me" begins with Julia receiving a call that her father has had a medical emergency. Since her mother has dementia and is in a nursing home, she is the only family he has. She rushes to the hospital and luckily, he has recovered. The doctor advises that she take him home with her where she lives with her husband. Her father soon meets Loreen, right at the time that Julia's mother dies.
I will admit that I couldn't finish this book, got about halfway through before I had to stop. Julia (or Julie) refers to her father as "Daddy" about every five words. Everyone else also refers to him as her daddy also, despite the fact that she is old enough to have gone to college and to be married. She acts very juvenile and I kept having to check her age and make sure this wasn't going back in time. I really had a hard time getting into the writing. The style is very simplified and things are a little too flat for me. Between these elements, I think it just wasn't my style unfortunately.
Generally, I like the idea of late-in-life love and sometimes it can be done really well (all about second chances and new/renewed feelings in a mature soul can be really great), but for me, this book was just a miss. I think it certainly would have a place for some people, but it just wasn't for me. Please note that I received this book from a goodreads giveaway.
I am loving this series by Jo Huddleston. This is book 2 in the series The West Virginia Series. I love the characters they are very well written. I know I looked forward to another book and following them to see what is going on in their lives. After Loreen has been heart broken before by a man she has a hard time finding trust in another man again. Then she meets Claude father to a student at the college. He is a recent widow and finds interest in her, but for some reason he just can't get her to trust him. What must he do to prove to her he won't hurt her. Great story pick this series up I know you will love it.
Trust Me is the second book in Jo Huddleston's West Virginia Mountains series. It continues the story of Robbie and Julie and also adds Julie's Dad Claude and Robbie's sister Adrianna and the changes in their lives. Julie's Dean of Women at the college becomes involved with Claude and has to learn how to trust a man again after being done wrong by a former boyfriend. Adrianna has to learn who she can trust and who she cannot trust. You will enjoy this sweet southern historical novel about life in the 1950's in the West Virginia mountains. You will laugh with them and hurt with them. I won this book in a contest and there was no requirement for a review. All views stated here are my own.
I enjoyed this book as much as the first in the series. It was a very good love story with a little excitement thrown in with adding Adriana, Claude and Loreen. I was so excited when I seen Book #3!! Can't wait to start reading that one.
First, I will say that the story itself is 5 stars. I gave 4 because of the errors in the book. Mostly wrong words. But, do not be discouraged by that, as it wasn't bad enough to make me quit reading or detract from the story.
I have enjoyed every one of Jo Huddleston's books that I have read. They are easy to read and the story line flows along well. I will not give you a synopsis, as you can read that in the description. I am here to tell you that if you like stories set back in a simpler time of life this book is for you. It is a Christian book, though not preachy in any way. It is Christian in that the main characters show how God impacts their lives and how they put their faith in Him. This story brings in a few new characters, but is mainly about characters in the first book, giving the main focus on Claude this time.
The characters are well developed and you get the feeling you are right there with them. It isn't a deep book, but one for a light read, for enjoyment and entertainment. I highly recommend this book.
The story takes the reader back to a simpler time for most although life was not without problems even then. Regardless of the age, we have dealt with life and death, loneliness, separation, health issues, and the list goes on. However, the vast majority of people did not have to deal with so many things that we face today. I enjoyed stepping back in time to remember the pace of life in the early 1960s. The story was interesting as several people were dealing with issues of trust. Dean Loreen Fletcher was probably most noteworthy because of the way she had been treated as a young person but she was not alone. The truth that she needed to learn is still quite applicable to the current age. I enjoyed this story.
A cute story of a budding romance between a middle aged couple, I found the story idea cute and I wanted to love it. However, the writing felt choppy, forced and lacked character development to the point that I almost put it down. I ended up enjoying finding out the rest of the story, but I wished it had been better.
I loved the first book in this series and wasn't disappointed with this one. I was pulled into the story from the first pages and thoroughly enjoyed following Loreen and Claude as they each struggled to put the hurts and insecurities of the past behind them and learned to trust each other with their future even though they came from completely different backgrounds. This author has certainly combined historical fiction, faith and romance in this story and written one that I can definitely recommend.
