After assembling his last major work, Illuminations , Rimbaud completely stopped writing literature at age 20 years in 1874.
A hectic, violent romantic relationship, which lasted nearly two years at times, with fellow poet Paul Verlaine engaged Rimbaud, a libertine, restless soul. After his retirement as a writer, he traveled extensively on three continents as a merchant and explorer until his death from cancer. As a poet, Rimbaud is well known for his contributions to symbolism and, among other works, for A Season in Hell , a precursor to modernist literature.

من كتاب (رامبو) حياته ، شعره / ترجمة خليل الخوري
- ان رجالاً مثله لا يشعرون طبعاً أنهم متفوقون على الآخرين ، انهم يشعرون أنهم مختلفين عنهم .
- لقد حمل منذ طفولته قرفاً سرياً للحياة .. اني محكوم عليّ منذ الازل .. والى الابد .
- وإن ثمّة ما يغرينا بالإعجاب بقوة شخصية لا تُدجّن .
- انه من هذه الكائنات غير الراضية اطلاقاً عن الوجود .. طبعاً لما حكم عليها أن تعيشه ، والتي تضمر امنياتها في عالمٍ أكثر نقاءً وأكثر حدة وأكثر جمالاً .
- ورامبو أقل قوة مما يبدو عليه .. وبتعبير آخر : إن قوته مشوبة بنقاط ضعف مخيفة .
- في هذه النفس القوية القاسية كانت ما تزال متبقية مناطق من البكارة والعفوية الطفولية ، لقد كان حقاً ذلك الولد الذي يتكلم عفوياً وبطريقة لهجة الباتوا الهندية المهذبة عن الموت الذي يسحق القلب وعن البؤساء الموجودين حقاً ، وعن الرحلات والاسفار التي تمزق القلوب.
- لقد كان حساساً ازاء الشفقة اكثر من أي انسان آخر .
- الخبز المغمس بماء بالمطر .
- كان يحس أنه شقيق البؤساء .
- انه بتبدى وفي وقتٍ واحد ، الرجل الاكثر التصاقاً بالأرض والمادة والرجل الاقل كفاءة في ايجاد غبطته ورضاه هنا في هذه الدنيا ..
وهكذا هي دائماً النفوس الكبيرة .. رغم سقطاتها ..
