STORY: 3 stars
PERFORMANCE: 5 stars
OVERALL: 4 stars

STORY:
Having heard only good things about Tim Miller, I was eager to get my hands on one of his books. Although the synopsis for MISTER SOCKY sounded a lot like CHUCKY and that creepy Twilight Zone episode about the girl with her doll, it was a short book so I decided to give it a shot. As expected, this book was rather predictable and reminiscent of the two stories I just mentioned. It also contained a lot of traits that reminded me of the pot-smoking teddy bear in the movie TED. Of the Miller may have been influenced by all or some of the aforementioned movies/shows, Miller adds his own clever twists making this a unique tale.

PERFORMANCE:
I hadn't even looked to see who the narrator of this audiobook was before ordering it so I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the voice of Joe Hempel who is by far the best male narrator I've ever heard. Based on the other audiobooks I have heard of his, I already knew that Hempel was exceptionally talented, consistently able to create realistic voices for both male and female adult characters. In MISTER SOCKY, Hempel again portrayed each character perfectly, this time demonstrating his ability to read dialogue for a grown woman, a 7-year-old boy and for the boys, "friend" Mister Socky. It really was incredible to hear how versatile Mr. Hempel's voice can be! He is a natural, consistently using just the right levels of pitch, tone, intonation and volume. I honestly don't know if I would have enjoyed this book as much as I did had I not listened to the audiobook??? Hempel's impeccable performance combined with Tim Miller's creative spin on these previously told stories resulted in my being able to, "watch" this insane story play out like a movie in my mind.

**** if you have not read this book yet, I highly suggest listening to it on audio… There is a special audio surprise at the very, very end BEFORE Hempel says, "The End". I can't say what or why – just listen and you'll understand! That extra special ending left me with chill bumps up and down my arms!

"This audiobook was provided by the narrator, Joe Hempel, at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review."

Glad Joe was nice enough to gift this one to me because the dude nailed the narration. Joe has a very distinct voice and his timing and pace of story are always right on the mark. Very well done, as usual, from Mr. Hempel.

This story was pretty much what I expected it to be. I even expected the gross out meter to be a ten…and then Tim turned it up to eleven. Daaammnn.

Most dolls are creepy. I have, however, grossly underestimated the pure unadulterated evil that is the sock monkey. (And I am mildly embarrassed that I did have one as a child). Mine was a wee tamer and thankfully didn’t tell me to run amok in a grocery store with a machete.

Supermarket slaughter, geriatric veejayjay removal, and family candlestick fun. A brutal and over the top violent and disturbing short from the obviously demented mind of Tim Miller. 3.5 Stars

This book very engagingly starts out with little boy shopping in a thrift store where he ends up buying a creepy looking sock monkey, even though the toy is creepy looking to his mom, it becomes a favorite toy for Dusty right then. This story entails not only the scariness caused by dolls and black-button eyed monkeys, it also involves a significant bloody violence, definitely not recommended for the light hearted.

Although, it seems pretty appealing initially, it gets confusing midway and terrifying throughout, the story-line wasn’t too convincing. The premise of living and reliving the crimes is not persuading enough to accept the Mister Socky as entertaining. It sort of lost its horrific charm when there was explaining of the clutter and confusion caused somewhere in between the book. No doubt, it was frightening until the very end but it was difficult to go along with the story line.

This tale of death, murder, rape and mayhem is for people who would be interested in not your halloweeny-ghost-like horror books but for hard-core crimes and what goes in the criminal’s mind. Certainly, you might want to sit down for this one and let yourself into it for a couple of hours.

Overall, the narration by Joe Hempel was excellent with Mister Socky’s voice being quite scary, well paced narration and no production issues. The gory details in the book are alarming if you’re fine with it, then this one you’d be able to enjoy. This is surprisingly very short, but very elaborate, the author manages to cover pretty much the whole life (and after life) of the little boy Dusty, the small poem at the very end sure will give you creeps if you manage to finish it.

Overall, I rather enjoyed this book. I thought that it was a twisted mash up of "Child's Play" meets "Ted". And even though this book was a bit extreme in many parts, I felt like it could have benefited from dialing back the graphic imagery in some places or cranking it to eleven but also omitting some of the cheesy one-liners in an effort to make the tone feel a bit more even.

I really dug the story and I am a sucker for novellas, but if this is any indication of his writing style, then I really hope that he decides to hire an editor very soon. I am normally not someone to gripe about spelling and grammatical mistakes, but this story was littered with so many of them that it actually detracted from the story.

Overall, this was the first book that I have read from Tim Miller but I doubt that it will be my last. The good outweighed the bad and it was an incredibly original book. Can't wait to check out what else he has in store!

It's been a long time since I have read anything by Tim Miller purely because I am over the extreme horror he is well known for. I was intrigued by the synopsis of this particular story and curious enough to give it a go. To be fair, I wasn't expecting very much out of it. I find that most extreme horror titles tend to be lacking in much of a story and I thought this would be more of the same.

Despite the copious amount of bloodshed this story has, there is actually a fantastic little story behind the slaying, rape and torture. Tim Miller shows that there is more to his books than mindless killing for our entertainment. I hope he continues to show us more of this in his future work as horror does indeed come in more shades than just red.

This is a very creepy read with a fabulous twist straight out of a sick version of The Twilight Zone.

Dusty's favorite store is the thrift store. Every time he visits the store, he runs straight to the toy aisle. This time he finds a sock monkey, who he names Mr. Socky. Little does he know that the stuffed toy will cause him to do some very evil things - or does it?

I'm trying to adventure into new genres here at the end of the year, to prepare myself for my goals in 2016. I haven't really read many extreme horror books, or any at all, but I would definitely categorize this one as that. It's definitely cringe worthy. If you're a fan of extreme horror and gore, I would recommend it to check out. Another reviewer said it was like Child's Play meets Ted, and I totally agree. It's kinda goofy in parts just because it did remind me of Child's Play so much. If it were a movie, it'd be a B-rated movie buuttttt... it was mildly entertaining.

** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **

Mister Socky is found at a thrift store by a little boy who obviously has some emotional problems BIG TIME!! Dusty and Mister Socky get into a lot of trouble all at the influence of Mister Socky and poor Dusty ends up in prison till his 21st birthday...then once again him and Mister Socky go on another murder and mayhem spree...

Interesting and quick listen...worth it if you like the genre, and a good narration!!

Beware of Mister Socky

This was a very scary but shocking story. I was not prepared for the violence at this level. I thought it was going to be about a little boy who bought a sock monkey that told him to do bad things. I was shocked where the author goes with this so just be aware..

Wow

Defiantly something different. Wasn't sure where the story was going to go in the beginning but I'm glad I stuck through it ! Never going to look at my son's toys the same ever again.

Very good story, some grammatical errors kept it from a 5 star however. Didn't take away from the story and was very enjoyable.

Chucky who??? OMG!!! Tim Miller has one heck of an imagination!!! Mr. Socky dioes proves what an AMAZING story teller Mr. Miller is!!!

This book reads like a movie. I actually saw the scenes play out in my head as I was reading. This was a book that I could not put down and kept me guessing as to what was coming next until the very end!!!

Dusty and Mr. Socky are a pair that I will not forget for a long time to come!!! This pair is INSANE!!! The adventures that they go on are not for the faint at heart...but if you love horror and gore, they will leave you very pleased!!!

disgusting and repulsive.

I love good horror writing, and I bought this book with high hopes that a story about a sock monkey controlling a kid would be interesting and scary. This repulsive piece of torture porn was anything but... besides all the grammatical errors, the premise of this book went downhill and nowhere after the kid's initial experience with the possessed toy. obscenely graphic and unnecessarily brutal...shock for the sake of shock. The storyline suffered and could have been something good if the author had a better imagination and not just relied on his deepest misogynistic fantasies..... I'd love my money and time back, there's cereal boxes with better plotlines than this crap.

If I ever see one of those monkeys in a store or god forbid a thrift store, I will punch it in the face and run!! After you read this story you will do the same, I promise you!! This story has gut wrenching gore, and twists and turns that will make your brain hurt!! You won't let your child near Mr Socky ever again, and if you have one you will be put it out in the trash as soon as you finish the story!! Enjoy!!

Damn these sock puppets....

I was afraid of sock puppets as a kid. So when I read this it was cool, cause I was pretty sure the last one my sister owned as a kid was haunted( crazy right?) This story was pretty cool it was didn't than what of Ann used to from Tim Miller. That isn't a bad thing though. I highly recommend to all fans of modern horror!!!!!!!!

Not a bad story, but it definitely is extreme in a few spots. There is a moral to the story.

Kid finds a sock puppet in a store, and Mr Socky forces him to do some truly evil stuff. Or does he?

It's okay. About what you'd expect from an extreme horror novel about an evil sock puppet.
