Wow! Even though this book is written decades ago, the message still is profoundly applicable. I try to keep my 5 stars to a minimum, reserving them for books that contain exceptional talent in writing or write about a message everybody needs to hear and multiple times! I will definitely be reading this one again!

As a type A, enneagram 1, people pleasing perfectionist, this book was a must read for me. The author digs into scripture, tells just the right stories from her life and those of others she has met and challenges her readers to think differently, to reflect on how we are actually doing in the area of control and to give our trust to God.

She covers how control can be direct or indirect, reasons why we control, ways we control those around us (finances, kids, spouse) and how it affects our lives and then finishes the book with chapters on control and the Bible as well as how we can gain spiritual freedom for ourselves.

This is a must read for ALL women. It is true for those that control directly, but also true for those women who think they don’t have control issues but are in actuality controlling others indirectly. Pick this one up and read!

I am going to make the bold statement that I believe every woman should read this book several times. It is a joy to glean from the wisdom that the Lord has given generously to this author.

This book was a mixed bag for me, and I considered not finishing it. I did however power through.

So, first the good stuff. The first couple sections about identifying what subtle controlling behavior can look like, and its possible causes was great. It challenged me in a positive way to examine myself and my motives. I appreciated the biblical context given to these issues. The concluding chapters are also well written.

Now the bad stuff. This book was written in 1991 and had been out of print for awhile. Some of the information and suggestions on eating disorders and mental health is antiquated. The flow of thought in certain chapters was jumbled, which made it hard to determine what point was being made.

Although this book did provide me with helpful information and introspection, I don't think I would recommend this book to anyone else. I believe it's very easy for a reader to miss the main idea on certain topics. It's often hidden In an overwhelming amount of anecdotes and confusing flow.

Every woman should read this book because every woman - without exception - struggles with this issue! I should read it again myself, because I think I've let my control freak-ness creep in again!
