Peter Laslett's introductory essay is the most profound and provocative interpretation of historical demography in print as it pertains to European and American sexual behavior of the past. My prudish-Mormon jaw was hanging open as I read the conclusions from strong empirical data about sexual attitudes and behavior in the past.
