The Passion of the Atheist

Rate this book
There seems to be an inherent notion that atheism is simply about logic and reason. While there is some merit to this notion, it in and of itself seems to imply that this is all there is to the atheist position. But we are not Vulcans, and as such we do not operate on logic alone. No matter how much we would like to think of ourselves as logic driven and enlightened people, we cannot neglect the fact that we are human and that our emotions play an important part in our beliefs or lack thereof.

So what I would like to offer with this title is that there is indeed an emotional component to the atheist position and also that this emotional component is as valid a reason for disbelief as any logical reasoning. Throughout this book I will put forward many emotional reasons that atheists have for our disbelief and go into as much detail as I can to describe not only the reasons for these emotions, but also the impact they have on us as individuals in coming to our position.

Casper Rigsby is a 34 year old husband and father. He is the author of the bestselling title The Bible in a Nutshell, a prominent blogger at Atheist Republic, and a very vocal advocate for out of the closet atheism. His works seek to address fundamentalism at its roots through theological and philosophical discourse, which is also highly irreverent and often even blasphemous. His straight-forward and blunt approach can be abrasive to some and refreshing to others.

Rigsby tackles several of the common arguments for atheism with a passion that belies the atheist stereotype of cold rationalism, but his logic is pretty solid for all that. This book is also a very personal book, very much about Rigsby's personal experiences that formed his passionate atheism and I found that quite identifiable. It's an uplifting read for atheists and could open a few theist eyes about the true state of the atheist position.

Note: I listened to the audiobook and the narration is a bit painful.

Makes sense

Rigby makes sense of the lies I listened to when I was young and naive and wanted to believe in someone or something greater than my human existence. Thanks to books and authors like Rigsby, I am no longer in the the dark.
