Kate è una ragazzina come tante con problemi col cibo, dalla banana alla carne, così che quando si rifiuta di mangiare la madre la mette in castigo in dispensa tra i prosciutti appesi e i sacchi di patate. La prima parte è una sorta di romanzo di formazione ambientato in una famiglia particolare o come oggi si usa dire "disfunzionale" : la madre una vedova lituana votata al risparmio ad oltranza dal carattere tirannico, una sorellina più piccola e furbetta, i classici casini a scuola... normale vita in un tranquillo sobborgo in Florida. Peccato che a Kate sia stato spiegato poco o nulla della pubertà come del sesso, così, complice uno sguardo indiscreto in una camera da letto, identifica il fare l'amore come un divorarsi reciprocamente, e le sue prime fantasie saranno dedicate a enormi tette e sederi strabordanti di cui strafogarsi. Quando poi a diciassette anni arriva al college, cerca di realizzare i suoi desideri con un paio di insegnanti, in giochini tra il culinario e il cannibalesco. mangiare, essere mangiati o mangiarsi...
Detta così sembra la trama di un horror di serie zeta, eppure funziona. Sopra le righe, grottesco e con tanto humour nero, non si prende mai sul serio; alcune situazioni sono memorabili altre molto più scontate, per non parlare degli ovvi richiami a hot dog e salsicciotti, però diverte anche nella parte finale, altrimenti indigeribile. L'ho comprato un po' a caso sbirciando la quarta di copertina in un negozio di libri usati, poi ho scoperto che è il romanzo di esordio dell'autrice di Il cielo in gabbia, opera di altro spessore che avevo apprezzato qualche anno fa. Uomini da mangiare concede un paio d'ore di piacevole e disimpegnata lettura. Tre stelle e mezza

Such an unfortunate cover for this excellent novel.

A woman raised by an abusive Lithuanian mother pieces together an idea from misunderstood snatches of conversation and Bible passage read literally that sex is the act of actually consuming one's partner. That's the headline plot summary but the details here are magnificent. Leunens, in full command of her prose, layers themes of the body, identity, religion, sexuality, coming of age, abuse, and education like flavors in a well composed broth. She shows a range of tones from dark to earnest to heady arthouse intellectual to hilarious and none of these feel misplaced or forced.

It's a shame this novel isn't more widely read. It really should be. I blame the cover.

Talk of one surprising novel! While staying at some friends home and having a very little selection of books at hand, I opted for this one. Incredibly witty, bizarre, confusing, I don't, hard to describe. The way Leunens weaves in gastronomy, religion and sex is done without any vulgarity yet with a level of description and humour that has stayed with since then and made keep an eye on this promising author.

I can honestly say I have never laughed and been so appalled in equal measure reading any book for a long, long time. The central character's mother was so eccentric she almost felt like a cartoon character. The style of writing was slick and kept you racing from paragraph to paragraph to find what appalling thing the mother would inflict on her hapless children next. In many ways it reminded me of Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit but this was much funnier.
Until about 2/3 'ds of the way through I was completely hooked and found it almost credible but it became so ridiculous towards the end that I felt dissatisfied with the conclusion. The description of Kate's complete misunderstanding of sexuality was silly. She was also supposed to be clever enough to have won a scholarship and I could not believe that someone of her intelligence didn't have the ingenuity to find out the true facts of life for herself. By the end, you had to conclude that she had become as barking mad as her mother or that loneliness and the systematic abuse she had received at the hands of her mother had warped any sense of reality. The latter is the conclusion I chose to believe.
Despite this, there are some very chilling themes explored here in a most original way : sexual abuse of women by men and religious bigotry to name just two.
I would recommend this to a woman who is VERY broad minded!

Fucked up. Bizarre. Disjointed. Difficult to read, with little sense of flow.

But for some reason, I couldn't stop reading it. Certainly not sorry that I pushed on, but I did wish throughout, that it was an easier read. Thankfully, it is relatively short.

This was a tough read. Although at times funny, it spins out of control and becomes more of a Chuck Palahniuk story. But in a speculative way that leaves me cold and unengaged. But there is also something in the writing itself that prevents the text to flow.

Mi è difficile fare un commento. L'ho valutato 3* perché mi è piaciuto e non mi è piaciuto..
Mi ha fatto riflettere, mi ha fatto paura, mi ha fatto impressione.. In alcuni momenti sembrava splatter in altri estremamente profondo.
Quello che ci ho visto io è che la paura e la mancanza di impegno nel spiegare, discutere e affrontare argomenti a volte difficili o considerati tabù e soprattutto l'ignoranza sono pericolosi per se stessi e per gli altri. Si parla di sesso in questo libro ma il concetto di fondo che ci ho visto io può essere applicato ad ogni argomento.
È breve e quindi, se non siete troppo impressionabili, consiglio la lettura.

Il romanzo di Christine Leunens ha davvero qualcosa di Lynch, così come riporta la quarta di copertina, riprendendo un commento di Vogue. È pieno di immaginazione onirica, di effetti speciali convertiti in metafore alimentari. Un corollario di personaggi che forse non raggiungerà la piacevole follia di Twin Peaks, ma per la crescita biologica della protagonista è fin troppo.Una madre ossessiva e lituana che crede nei “soldi che lavorano sodo”, un padre morto in un incidente d'auto imbarazzante, una sorella con cui ha in comune solo i vestiti cuciti dalla madre, (stesso modello, stesso colore), una casa vicino a un canale e idee fantasiose ed economiche a tavola. Questa è Kate, o meglio questo è quello che non vorrebbe essere. Perché le bocche degli adulti sono piene di parole che inghiottono invece di sputare. Le verità se le mangiano, lasciando ai bambini solo l'uso dei sogni per capire i fatti della vita.

Quite a bizarre story, maybe not for everyone. Would I recommend it? Hell yes, but keep an open mind.
