Lo que yo pienso sobre la guerra

Rate this book

Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: Лев Николаевич Толстой; most appropriately used Liev Tolstoy; commonly Leo Tolstoy in Anglophone countries) was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer.

His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Tolstoi and the war
Need to start saying this book, at least for me, reflects the soul of Tolstoi, his heart, all what he believed and felt. Is like touching his face, hearing his voice.
In a previous post I said 'The Sebastopol sketches' is a hard book, raw, moving and heartbreaking. It was difficult to read it, mostly because the image of a young Tolstoi there, covered in blood, was always in my mind. But this edition I have contains more essays and fragments too and with the other books you can totally understand him and is like you were having a conversation, or most like hearing him, talking about love, humanity, and God. Is totally amazing. With the second part of the book, we can see the deep connection he had with religion and God. Some quotes, some of his thoughts, are totally touching and somehow devastating. Sometimes I did not agree with him, because sometimes his ideas feels very strict, but I can't, and I don't want to talk about religion here. What is wonderful and what is very important is his love for humanity, the love he professed for every living creature, I sincerely do not care about religion.
Each of his ideas is deep, complex, they destroy you. Enter in your mind and make you think in thousands of things at a time. Is amazing how brave he was writing these books, talking about the shame of war, the shame of the tzar and how he use the life of these innocent men.
Can't even put in words how much I adore these books, and him.
