Actual rated 2.5 but I gave a 3 for 1/2 's are not an option.
I was gifted a PDF copy by the author as part of the Advanced Reader copy (ARC) program for an honest review. This was my first read by Aaliyah Jackson.
Although this story possessed components for a higher rating, I noticed some discrepancies that prevented me from giving that rating. While I'm not an author, I am an avid reader & have certain expectations I feel are important in making a story complete.
The title was not completely in conjunction with the content presented. I'm not exactly sure why Laila was given the title of "side bitch". There was a slight mention that Laila seen Troy & her best friend, Kiki, share a brief kiss & hold hands- but nowhere did I read Troy was involved in a relationship with anyone. It was also stated that Kiki & Laila had spoken about Laila's feelings for Troy, but Kiki was never introduced as a character except for that sentence & not mentioned again. I would hope that if I was sexing my best friend's boyfriend & told her about it, she would say something...Nor was it mentioned Kieran had a girlfriend. There was also no mention of the characters descriptions at all--this was supposedly a BWWM drama interracial romance story.
Although this was a novella, I thought the characters (mainly Laila) could have more developed. When Laila was first introduced, she was a shoe salesperson & was totally disrespected by a "bougie" customer who thought she walked on water. I thought Laila's response was justified as she was only requesting respect. Unfortunately, her manager thought otherwise & she was relieved of her duties. I felt more should have been revealed concerning her bitch attitude-in the beginning other than the one episode. To me, she appeared rather ordinary ( Idk, maybe I'm one too). Following that fiasco, while thinking of Troy, (who was a fellow choir member) he texted her & came to visit to share some good news.
I must say the sex scenes were the highlights of the story as they were written quite well.
It was after the unexpected diss from Troy where Laila starts to show a bit of her other side. Laila decides she wants to destroy Troy & begins the necessary steps to have Troy's dreams erradicated. This was a standalone short read & while I was able to complete in a couple of hours, there are many questions that have not been answered and I feel I have been left hanging.
I would however, like to sincerely wish Ms. Jackson the best with her future endeavors .

Loved it
Loved how she didn’t take the crap that happened to her, but actually got even and surpassed what started out as bad luck. Wish she and Kieran would’ve had fall in love relationship and none of the drugs.

I enjoyed this fast paced story where Laila, a woman who is down on her luck doesn't stay down for long. Troy a guy she has sort of been seeing has just signed a record deal and has offered to help her out until she can get on her feet again. But as soon as she sleeps with him, he is no longer hanging around. She realizes that she has been played and vows to get him back. When she goes to speak to him, she walks into the recording studio and is mistaken for a back up singer. She decides to go along with it, and thank goodness she does. The door is opened for her to travel to LA and audition for her own record deal. When she arrives and meets the producer Kieran, she see's that her plan to get back at Troy is going to be even easier. Will Kieran help her get a recording contract? Or his he only interested in the extras she can provide? Will he help her ruin Troy? Read it find out!
