A concise and expert book on the proven patterns to use while fly fishing various conditions in Yellowstone National Park. I have to admit to being a card-carrying member of the Craig Mathews fan club. He is a dedicated fly fisherman, conservationist, teacher, business owner, and author. His books are always heavy on detail and practical information and light on fluff and romanticism. This book is precisely that formula as well.
This book covers 40+ patterns, which might seem a small number until you understand Mathews' point, that these core patterns provide you the flexibility to tie almost any color, size, and hatch-matching specificity that you desire. But he also makes the point that it's not always necessary to do so. His advice is to get specific when you need to but don't if you don't need to. I like that sort of approach.
There is a newer edition of this book that I recently saw on the shelves at Blue Ribbon Flies, Mathews' shop in West Yellowstone, Montana. The edition I have is from 1987 and shows its age a bit in the photos and layout. I would imagine the newer edition would appeal to those looking for a more up-to-date copy of this book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to take a trip to Yellowstone especially those who aren't interested in tying dozens and dozens of variations on the hatches occurring. Mathews has been guiding in Yellowstone for a long time and this book is a distillation of his wisdom accumulated over those years. Take advantage of it and you'll have a happier, more fish-filled trip. I did.
