Brooke’s life is a stable version of insanity; she works to pay bills, she pays bills to work. Her promiscuous boyfriend is playing around and her boss is ruining her career. Heading to work one day, Brooke misses her turn-off and decides to keep driving. She stops in the middle of the bush with no supplies, no phone reception or civilisation and discovers a world she could only dream of.

After enjoying ‘Shadows of Light’ and ‘Binding Darkness’ I was excited to find that the author of these two stories had published ‘Jaylin’, a short story. Seconds later, it was on my Kindle and I was transported into the world of Brooke, who was experiencing a troubled phase in her life. We all know about these times—nasty co-workers, idiot boyfriend—and can sympathise with her plight.
Brooke takes some time out from these troubles (almost accidentally) and that is when all the good things begin to happen.
‘Jaylin’ is escapism at its best. I am not sure how long this story is, but I found it to be an ideal length, where worlds are fully created and characters well fleshed-out. Ms Finlay is an author who has a good handle on pacing, as seen in her previous books, so the story flows well.
‘Jaylin’ finishes on a note that suggests we might see more of Brooke and Cade in the future. I certainly hope so.
