This title combines three complementary titles on popular subject in one attractive gift package. Railroads have been part of the American way of life since 1828 when America's first common-carrier railroad, the Baltimore and Ohio, laid its first rail. Since then, hundreds and hundreds of railroad companies have been born. "The Classic American Railroads" gift set chronicles 44 of America and Canada's most loved railroads from the golden age. Most have disappeared or merged into the super railroads of today, but these "fallen flags" are fondly remembered. Here together in one boxed set are three railroad "Classic American Railroad", "More Classic American Railroads", and "Classic American Railroads, Volume III."
An excellent photographic and written record of great American railroads. Published in 1995, during the period of the pending Southern Pacific and Union Pacific railroads, the book anticipates the consolidation of the transportation industry into a limited number of big railroads. The hand writing was on the wall so to speak. The photographs are wonderful and will please any rail enthusiasts. The descriptions are relatively short covering major events in each railroads history. An enjoyable experience for me since I grew up within a half mile of the Pennsylvania Railroads mainline from Pittsburgh to Cleveland.
My dad loves watching trains so as a kid I was dragged all over the Western US and Canada on train-watching expeditions. Those were some of my favorite memories growing up, and I absorbed all my dad's stories about how railroads once dominated transportation in the United States before the rise of airplanes and highways. This book highlights the most famous of the (mostly bygone) railroads of the golden age of trains in the US. Lots of beautiful pictures and brief but engaging histories of each of the railroads. Definitely not for everybody, but if you have any interest in trains then this is one of the best books you can find.
