I have read some of Thigpen’s theological works. and loved them. When this book arrived for my youngest daughter we were both excited about it. She read it to me immediately after we unpacked it. And she has read it to me three times since. She instantly recognized the color pattern from a VBS a few year ago. The colors appear in this order:
Black White Blue Brown Green Yellow Purple Orange Red Gray
The book is designed to help children see the colors in the world around them in a new way. It highlights the beauty of creation. And the love of the creator. It highlights some of the masterpieces in creation.
Thigpen’s verse in this volume is wonderful. My daughter marveled at the words as much as the illustrations from John Folley. She loved the illustrations and has gone over the book several times. This is a wonderful book for the young ones in your life. An excellent addition to any church or home library. It is an absolutely fantastic picture book for children.

Thigpen wrote a very nice poem here, tying in major colors with acts of creation. Thigpen makes it sound like the stars (white) were made on Day 1 of creation week, but they created on Day 4, along with the sun and moon. He mixes up birds with foxes and dogs, and dolphins with elephants and hippos; but that is mostly because he is making a point about red colors and gray colors. The worst faux pas on the penultimate spread, where Thigpen wrote: "...and all the creatures gave to us to be our friends and food." A careful reading of the first chapter of Genesis would have Thigpen understand that the original food for all animals and humankind was plant food--fruit and seed plants, etc. Mankind was first allowed to eat animal meat after the end of the global flood. The illustrations are very appealing, and on the last spread, the author has depicted several people of different ethnicities.
One of the best children's books I've ever shared! This pre-k book was given as a gift by the author when my husband and my first child was born, and seventeen years later, it's still on our shelves!! We share this book with our young guests, and I'm saving it for grandkids--wayyyyy down the road (: Thank you to the author--who at the time was also a beloved professor--for conveying a simple yet thought-provoking message at a level even the youngest of eyes and ears can comprehend!!
