Haven Janero has a bright future of becoming a FBI agent when a widespread infection sweeps across the nation, reanimating victims into walking corpses with an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Her dreams crushed and her world forever changed, she struggles to keep her loved ones safe and come up with a plan of long-term survival.
Colin MacConnell, a kilt-wearing, bagpipes-playing, sword-wielding Scotsman, is visiting his father in the States, but soon realizes he may never see his homeland again when borders close and travel becomes impossible. As society around them crumbles and lawlessness and chaos take over, they must fight hordes of ravenous zombies… and a dangerous enemy from the past who is hell-bent on seeking twisted vengeance.
I recently noticed that on my Kindle, I have about 40 or 50 zombie apocalypse, extinction level event, post-apocalyptic scenario type novels gridlocked on my queue. I therefore decided to go through some of these. I set up reading goals of reading x number of classics and x number of author's novels and I find them helpful, but I aspire to read more than actually possible. I don't know exactly how I acquired The Good, the Dead, and the Lawless by Angelique Archer, but I was happy to own this first-in-a-series book. Here, the reader is introduced to prospective FBI agent Haven Janero and her family. The world is just about to become her oyster when a terrorist plot that is meant to affect the United States comes to fruition in a way that appears more insidious than the planners actually dreamed. Yes, folks this was a planned terrorist event that has gone bad. (Not a spoiler: this is right in the introductory chapter and in the book blurb. The narrative is told in third person, but switches perspectives between the other characters, but it is clear that this is Haven's story and only a matter of time before everyone meets Haven. The novel is horrific, gory, and violent. If you're not a zombie fan, stay away.
A sinister terrorist scheme unleashes zombies in the US. Haven is an FBI agent in training and has to use her skills to keep herself and her loved ones alive. Shifting between viewpoints we see how the virus spreads and how easy it is to infect people. It was a good read, some gory parts and the main characters were well written. It does make me wonder why people don't immediately think zombies when these things happen. One chapter did take on a different tense which was confusing, but otherwise it was well written. I enjoyed the story and would recommend it to zombie fans
The Undoing The Good, The Dead, and The Lawless, Book 1 Angelique Archer
This was a great read. Haven will capture your heart with her soft personality that is hidden under her hard exterior. She was raised by her grandmother and grandfather with her two siblings in small town Georgia. Now she is going through the hiring process with the FBI, and the world goes to hell. The Strain Z23 will be released all over the world. You will need to read this to find out how and who will survive. Many twists and turns with many wonderful characters from many different countries. Ms Archer writes with great detail but quickly moves through the scenes so you will not get bored. This story will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and screaming. I cannot wait to see where Ms A takes this next.
Although this is not typically a genre I tend to read, I did thoroughly enjoy the book. The entire 'zombie' thing has never really appealed to me, but this tome about such, surprisingly, those zombies did take a backseat to the true storyline. The characters and their stories were extremely likable, with the exception of said zombies of course. Interestingly there is a strong focus on family values, trust and friendships alike. Something there's not enough of in this somewhat sad definition of what we refer to as life today in my honest opinion. Given the actual subject matter, this was a rather 'refreshing' read aside from the grotesque descriptions of zombies chewing on assorted body parts. Very well thought out, and extremely well edited (a pet peeve of mine), this book does indeed leave the reader wanting more... And guess what? There is more! Highly recommended.
I purchased this book directly from the author at a local comic con. She shared the plot with me and I am a sucker for Zombies and Apocalyptic Horror. This book has a strong female character, blood and gore, suspense and it has psychological components mixed in as well. How would you react if you were in this situation? This book is fun, fast paced and I love the character development. Angelique doesn't shy away from the hard deaths of loved characters and she sets the stage for a great sequel. If you enjoy zombie horror, apocalyptic carnage and suspense filled reading, this book is for you! Knowing that there is a sequel and a 3rd book on the way makes me happy!!
This is a very well written book that gets you hooked with its many twists and turns. The author goes into great detail in all the dramatic scenes. There is a shocking plot twist in the end that will leave you wanting answers. I can’t wait to read the sequel!
The characters are real. Miss Archer puts so much feeling an realism into her story. You want to reach out and comfort some of the characters and slap others. I loved this book and can't wait to continue the journey.
This could have been a great story, but the author turned it into the most depressing piece of garbage. First 40% of the book was story after story of getting us to know someone intimately, then killing them off, having them then eat their babies and loved ones. Then we get the heroine who could have been a fantastic character except for her petty ugly nastiness to her sweet innocent sister, which in the end leads to a brutal scene that made me want to vomit. After that ending, I could care less if Haven lives or dies a horrible painful death. I'm hoping for the latter. I only gave it two stars, as she actually has writing ability. Too bad she writes depressing ugliness.
The set up is "plausible." The characters are relatable, and the and story lines are both action packed and emotionally crushing. Characters we like must make bad decisions for justifiably the right reasons, but are unable to forgive others for perceived weakness, cowardice, or poor judgment, which have horrific results.
This book is the first in a trilogy and worth the read. I look forward to the next book to see how the unrelated characters find each other and form a makeshift family to survive.
Good start to a series, I hope. The characters are ones you could come to care about. The story was just getting interesting, so hope there is more to come.
