Quilla’s Sky is the First book in the four book series (An Angel Spirit).
We all know being a teenager can be pretty hard. Trying to assert your independence, find your own voice, or even to get noticed by the cute boy at school. It can suck! Imagine how hard it would be if you had freaking wings!
Quilla Sparks is an awkward seventeen year old that was gifted or cursed with large birdlike wings. Sure, you’re thinking that would be awesome! Who wouldn’t want to fly!? Well the first rule Quilla learns is NO FLYING!!! Not only that, she is trapped in a seemingly maximum security prison, a.k.a. her quaint suburban home. Her parents treat her more as a lab experiment than a daughter. They administrate daily tests, under the instruction of government sanctioned organization known as PRIME. PRIME’s purpose is using supernatural creatures to advance their technology. Poor Quilla would have never seen daylight if it wasn’t for the tiny loophole in her phylogeny.
She needs real sunlight, fresh air, and a hint of freedom to thrive. A thriving specimen is better than a dead one, they tell her, at least for now. But when Quilla puts her limited freedom to the test by accidentally flashing her feathery secret to the boy next door, Mason Price. PRIME is forced to reexamine her value in a series of deadly obstacles, her own personal “Quilla Games,” which pit her against mechanically modified paranormal creatures. Quilla has to push her doubt aside and discover her own strength to “Progress or Die” is the PRIME leader, General Hamm insists. This is the first action packed book in a four book series. Quilla’s Sky is a challenging, captivating and inspiring story.
Shondra Hilliard was born in the hottest month of July, in the hottest metropolitan city, Houston Texas. Did I mention it was hot? I received this novella for free in exchange for an honest review.
Quilla is not quite a normal girl. Born with wings on her back, she's had to be sequestered away for her entire life, subject to homeschooling and doctor examinations. Everything changes when she turns 18. She has to survive challenges that she never imagined facing. This novella was advertised as a sort of supernatural hunger games-esque story, which sounded really exciting.
Quilla is a naive character, someone who has been trapped in her home for so long that she can't see the world and its dangers even when they're right in front of her / told to her. It's like her living shut-away from the world has stopped her fight-or-flight instinct. I really wanted to see her grow. Perhaps most of this happens in the next novellas, because I didn't feel like there was enough in this one. My biggest gripe with her innocence was when she was convinced she knew what unconditional love was after "meeting" a boy.
As a concept, Quilla's Sky was really good. People who are kept as prisoners and used because of their supernatural differences, what's not to like? Unfortunately, what spelled this novella's downfall (for me, at least) was the fact that everything occurred far too quickly. Action, emotions, and characterization didn't have enough time to develop their own flavor. The plot would have been more interesting if it had been stretched out and expanded upon; instead, we as readers are told things instead of shown. I think the biggest reason for this is because it was a novella. Had it been a single novel instead of several novellas, I think the story would have grown more naturally. Dividing it into too many novellas made it difficult to care about the characters. I just can't care about characters that I only spend roughly 30 minutes with. I think it would have been more interesting to have it all contained into one novel instead.
The writing was easy to understand, and with the exception of a few missteps in tenses and words, pretty clean. Even though this isn't for me, I do think that it would be good for a younger age group. It is a quick read and is very straightforward with the concepts of good people versus bad people.
This one is hard to rate. I'm going with writing was okay but I don't have any interest in checking out the rest of the novellas because it didn't hook me, so 1.5 stars officially.

3,5/5
This book revolves around Quilla Sparks, a young woman of 18, who was born with wings. She's homeschooled and has therefore never been able to lead a normal life. Her father is seldom present and her mother is at the same time her teacher and doctor. She's not allowed to show her wings let alone fly (she does it anyway but very cautiously and in the middle of the night) and is forced to annual check ups in a hidden laboratory. Everything seems rather strange in this house and it gets even stranger when Quilla is brought to a cabin where she will have to prove herself.
I must say I liked this book, even though it has its weaknesses. The idea of a story that revolves around a girl, that's kept as a prisoner by her own parents just because she has an ability that nobody else has, reminded me a bit of the X-men (and I LOVE the X-men :D). So 5 stars for the idea. The problem I have with this book is that everthing happens really fast and out of the blue what confused me a bit at the beginning. Something else I did not quite understand is how Quilla could stay so calm at everything that was revealed to her before she has to leave. I probably would have freaked out .
In conclusion I must admit that the story is quite catchy; I read it in one sitting and will probably read the next books in the series as well. I would recommend it to everybody who likes a quick, not too complicate story with a supernatural/futuristic twist for in-between.
I wish we could give half stars! I would rate this at 3.5. This story was so intriguing!!! I was hooked from the beginning but I wish it was longer!!! The story itself seemed a bit choppy at times, it jumped from scene to scene very abruptly, it would have been nice to have a little more transition BUT it was really good! My kind of story! I can't wait to read more! Curse you cliffhangers!!! ;)
