Found this one on my bookshelf while searching for something to explain the mass to non practicing Catholics. Though outdated, it held my attention through most of the book and was a short read. I would prefer an updated version with references to the new translation of the Roman missal, and also something with a little less history lesson and author opinions. Overall a decent read if you are looking for some insight and history of the Mass.

The late Catholic priest, Father Joseph M. Champlin, former Rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Syracuse, New York, wrote a great introduction concerning the Roman Rite form of the Mass, including historical insights, as well as annotating chnges to the Mass as he goes through the order of the Mass, from beginning to the end. This is by no means a comprehensive theological treatsie on the subject of the Mass. Rather, it is a very well written introduction to the order of the Mass, the changes and reasons for either the inclusion or exclusion of certain aspects of the Rite, and the thinking behind such considerations. For what it does, 'The Mystery and Meaning of the Mass' should help the reader be engaging in his/her quest for understanding of this beautiful and one of the highest Sacramental expressions of faith in the Catholic Church. This work should provide enough of a taste to take on more deeper and in-depth study of liturgical theology.
