The Solemn Golem

The floors are shaking, and the windows are cracking . . . something big and heavy is stomping around Corman Towers. Furry and Flo are awoken by the ruckus and discover an enormous stone golem wreaking havoc in the alley behind their building. It's up to them to get the gravel goliath back to Furry's world where he belongs . . . but making it back to their own world in time is easier said than done.

Read this for an article on golems I'm working on, though it doesn't qualify (these are generic Golem As Animated Figure, not kabbalistic golems). That said, the story of the young protagonist Flo and her werewolf friend trying to liberate some golems from their master was pretty cute. Annoying it ends on a cliffhanger as I'm unlikely to catch the resolution.

Readers not familiar with the Furry and Flo series can gather enough clues from the text about past occurrences to enjoy the story. I would recommend this novel to children who are confident reading short chapters and like adventure. The magic elements are introduced lightly with enough realism to satisfy those who do not like high fantasy. The plot contains enough humor to keep reluctant readers interested, but the book contains very few full-page cartoon illustrations, which may deter children who flip through. Children in grades 3-5 will enjoy this illustrated fantasy series. (Review by Meghann MacMillan)
