A roadside mishap results in a troll baby and a human baby switching places. The mother troll is fascinated by the human baby, but the humans who end up with the troll changeling aren't quite as enamored. Still, the mother realizes that the troll baby is innocent of any deceit, and attempts to treat him as well as she would her own. This only earns her the scorn of her husband and the rest of of the town, but she is determined in her resolution to treat the ugly troll well. The day she finally sacrifices all of her own happiness is the day the trolls release the human baby, who is now a fine young boy.

This book would work best in a second grade classroom (or higher). There are some dark and scary moments that deal with the loss of a child or parent, and there is potential violence
directed at the troll child when the father threatens to drop or burn the changeling. In the end, however, a mother's love triumphs over everything, which is a positive message for children to hear.
