The interesting thing about this novel is the focus on happiness. This is expressed in two distinct ways. First of all is the focus on femininity; even if you have embraced your womanhood (womanness), you are not guaranteed happiness. More importantly is the idea that, if you are too rigid (instead of being flexible), you will not be happy. An interesting book. I'd be curious to see what it would be like if it were written today, as opposed to the early 90s.
