The Afterlife Bible: The Definitive Guide to Otherwordly Experience

Rate this book
The Afterlife Bible describes the many beliefs in an afterlife, from ancient myths and religions to contemporary spiritual faiths. Sarah Bartlett explains how the scientific community has taken part in the search for evidence of the afterlife and reveals the role of contemporary spiritual practices.

Topics in The Afterlife Bible include:

The Search for Evidence: Gives the history of how the religious, the scientists, the believers and the doubters explain the afterlife in hard evidence.

Belief: Describes the world's many cultural interpretations of an afterlife. These include polytheism, re-incarnation and karma, ancient Egyptian beliefs, the Vedic traditions, Christianity, Ancient Mesoamerican beliefs, Kabbalah, and Wicca.

The Nature of the Soul: Describes the Ancient Greek soul, the Ancient Egyptian soul, soul spark, Plato's chariot, the soul in Taoism, Gnosticism, Islam and many more.

Afterlife Places and Beings: Paints a picture of the afterlife. Osiris, the Mesopotamian underworld, offended spirits, the afterlife as suffering, an afterlife for heroes, and mythical journeys to the afterlife.

Experience and Healing: Gives readers easy exercises and rituals for meditation, channeling, dream work, astral travel, scrying, mediumship, and automatic writing. Throughout history, civilizations have believed in an afterlife. More recently, new parapsychological research, personal reports of near-death experiences, and scientific studies into the nature of energy and matter, have prompted a renewed interest in discovering the truth. The Afterlife Bible is a great start on that journey.

I'm still not sure why I read the entirety of this book. I saw it at the local bookshop, leafed through it and from the description on the back, assumed it was about how various religions and mythologies related to the idea of the afterlife. The subject was of interest to me as I am writing a book about immortal characters and wanted to connect their existence with older beliefs throughout history.

Arguably, the book does talk about the subject, albeit less than a third is dedicated to it. This third presented some of the more important mythologies and how they related to the concept of soul (both from a religious and a philosophocal point of view), of death and of places beyond death (such as heaven or hell). Some (such as the Ancient Egyptian religion, based on the idea that death is only a transition to the afterlife) were grossly simplified, some were more detailed (such as the Greek concepts), others were merely mentioned (such as Native American beliefs). There was also a kind of glossary in one of the chapters which talked about gods associated with various death cults, but the presentation was incoherent and in complete disorder, making it very difficult to follow.

The rest of the book focused way too much on modern and contemporary beliefs regarding the soul. Some were more interesting, such as out of body experiences or near death experiences. Most of them, however, were about spiritualism, neopaganism, modern shamanism etc. and all that. I didn't mind them being mentioned and explained, however you could see the complete bias of the author when talking about them, as she seemed to believe every little thing. Whenever she mentioned scientists and quantum energy, my head hurt from the leaps of logic she made trying to connect things completely unconnected. Also there is close to no science in this book and now I feel like reading about the subjects from a more sciency angle.

The last 100 pages or so of the volume contained the last chapter, which was about developing your spiritual sense. I have no idea why it was included, as it had very little to do with the idea of afterlife. Some exercises suggested by the author were downright laughable, others were somewhat creepy (the thought of imagining I had roots gave me anxiety). If you are a believer in these things, I suppose the book will only confirm your beliefs. If you aren't and you're also not a susceptible person, this book really isn't the one to convince you of their truthfulness.

Last thing, there were so many pictures that had nothing to do with the discussed subject. They seemed to be there only for being aesthetically pleasing and for inducing a sense of mysteriousness. Some of them were even mislabeled.
