Colonial Encounters in the Age of High Imperialism is the first book in the Longman World History Series, edited by Michael Adas. This title examines the world-transforming experience of Western imperialism during the period from 1870 to 1914. Case studies focus specifically on Belgium and the Congo, Hawaii and the United States, and India and Britain and examine the experiences of both colonizers and colonized, men and women, elite officials and faceless laborers.
A short volume on imperialism between 1870 and 1914, it examines different forms of colonialism throughout the globe and picks out the diverse factors at play with grounded examples and clarity. Definitely a dense book to read, but not ultra-dense.
this book was also read for history 419, and was much easier to comprehend than the other book that we read for exam 1. the last official chapter made sad because of the treatment of women in imperial empires, but what has changed between the women of that time and the women of today? where are the human rights?
read for history 419. overall, a relatively easy book to digest and understand. it was organized well but with a lot more focus on certain colonies rather than more overview on other imperial powers during this time period.
