Although Lilith, an astrological point, has been known to astrology since the early 1700s, it is only now that Lilith has been put into a workable perspective, useful in chart delineation. This comprehensive book begins with Lilith's astronomical history and legends as a reference point for its influence in the chart. Delphine Jay then goes on to give complete delineations of Lilith through each sign, house and aspect, all of which are based upon her extensive research and experience. Numerous examples illustrate Lilith's meaning and influence in the chart. Also included is a chapter on the delineation of Lilith in return charting by house position. About Interpreting Lilith, astrologer Michael Munkasey Delphine first presented me with the work she was doing on Lilith, I was quite skeptical that such an effect could exist. . . . I quickly became a convert! Since then I have tried Lilith in many different ways, and have found that it consistently works, and in the way it has been described that it should work!
The book is about the Dark Moon, a unlikely-sounding, shadowy object that orbits the Earth beyond the Moon or, more likely, a dust cloud and tiny, temporarily orbiting asteroids that have only recently been spotted from an "objective" position outside the Moon's orbit and off Earth.
Which is significant because it relates in a very literal way to the symbolic meaning of the Dark Moon - the development of objective, impersonal, and emotionally mature (as opposed to suppressed or repressed) perspectives. Translating literal facts right into a figurative meaning is the most simple and straightforward way I know of to begin creating successful astrological interpretations for something not grasped intuitively.
I am finding that Delphine Jay's interpretations work well for Asteroid Lilith (the most concrete, "embodied" Lilith in the chart) and the three Black Moon points - osculating Lilith, mean Black Moon Lilith, and the corrected Black Moon Lilith or Interpolated Lunar Apogee - which represent calculated focal points - and the apogee point? - of the Moon's slightly elliptical orbit around the Earth - a kind of second center of gravity in the Earth-Moon system, but one that has no solid body associated with it.
Symbolically, Lilith's house positions represent the areas of life in which one needs to find an elevated, impersonal or objective (as in vocational or avocational) expression of creative energy or intellect - or be denied success and satisfaction in that area of life. Once the impersonal approach is connected with, Lilith supplies it with abundant, instinctual, creative intellect.
Lilith functions by amplifying the expression of the energy of the sign it is in, carrying it to an extreme, in other words, for the purpose of forcing an individual to develop a more mature emotional perspective through the frustration of personal desires that it draws one towards or compels one to express, until the selfish desires have been transcended or purged from the personality. It seems to me like, let's blow it up real big and go right to it, so you can get over it faster and learn your lesson the hard way, so you'll remember it, which hopefully happens, rather than getting stuck in frustrating patterns of expression.
With the Dark Moon, also, the individual often hides the expression of it's dark moon talents and perspectives to protect it - just as the Dark Moon cloud or asteroids stay hidden from our sight on Earth. Early in life, they were probably not accepted, making it emotionally unsafe to express them early in life. This can create the effect of seeing almost the opposite expression - on the surface, at least, and maybe even within the person's own awareness - until Lilith breaks through later in life.
Delphine Jay seems to say that Lilith's seductive lures and her denials and frustrations aren't really "Lilith being mean", because that would be personal, and Lilith is simply as ruthlessly impersonal as the weather. Getting emotional about them only amplifies the problematic aspects, but looking at the situation from a detached, mature (though not emotionally suppressed) perspective, opens the way forward and unlocks her trove of hidden talents and creative power. Lilith just doesn't "work" when given personal desires, anymore than an ATM would work when fed candy bars instead of debit cards, though she does seem to tempt a person to input the wrong thing if they need to learn a lesson.
I was glad that the author also pointed out that Lilith doesn't represent the entire personality - doesn't replace the personal, emotional aspects and needs of one's life, but balances them with a broader, more socially-oriented perspective - and ample talents to express in that area of life once the proper outlet and appropriate perspective and approach are found.
In it's effect on the emotional process of an individual's growth, Lilith's function is much like that represented by the astrological Saturn in the material realm - responsibilities an individual must successfully work out in order to proceed, like managing finances and constructing a successful approach to the practical aspects of everyday life. Lilith works more painlessly with objective signs like Aquarius and Capricorn, and often gives a person a hard time in emotional signs like Cancer - until the emotions are handled with enough skill to apply her energies productively.
If you're thinking of learning about and working with Lilith in the personality - and in astrology - I would suggest Delphine Jay's Interpreting Lilith as a seriously good overview of Lilith in the chart that will bring you far on your path of understanding.
While this Lillith is not talking about the Black Moon Lilith, they kind of are interchangeable. I think the author did a really good job describing the signs of Lillith and a particularly good job describing the houses that Lillith is in the natal chart.
