A reasonable guide to the basics of boxing, which has YouTube video links to provide assistance. Reading this book won't do any harm, but you'd get more from a couple of sessions in a boxing gym. The actual explanation of boxing technique, and the section on punch combinations, were far superior to the other parts. These range from unintentionally hilarious (introduction, to a lesser extent the conclusion) to a bit unnecessary and not completely accurate (history, women's boxing, actually pretty much all the other bits). His Top 50 ATG boxers list is a bit wacky as well!
2.5 stars.
Edit: Here is one of my favourite parts of the introduction...
It can be argued that the world of sporting and professional boxing is just a miniature of the real world. Every single male in the world (and a few females) has engaged in a boxing match at least once in their lifetimes. Arguably it can be considered as the most natural of sports. Is there anything easier and more natural than tightening your hand to a fist and launching it to the face of someone you are in an argument with?
A very good book. It covers the history of boxing. Many boxers think of boxing as the anti-martial art. I am glad the writer calls it a martial art because to that that is what it is. It teaches discipline and strengthens both body and mind. However, as stated in this book, anyone willing to box must accept that they are going to get hit. The book also covers the basic techniques with links to videos.
Answered lots of my questions. Lots of defined terminology of boxing combos. Also, drones four different kinds of boxing(they come with youtube link demos). Also, provides a list of top 50 boxers.
I choose this book in a effort to learn more about boxing. As a middle aged novice boxer I found it very informative about the history and tactical theory of the sport. It is a great short read for anyone want I g to start boxing. It also has useful link to YouTube to help cement your skills.
Let me get this strait I'm Cormac's son and I've just started boxing but this is a great guide showing combinations videos on how to performs punches and just shows me the A to Z of boxing, a bit short though still give it a five stars for informativity, is that even a word? It's the only description I can think of
