“With life comes death. Life, the prologue. Death, the epilogue. Or so we’re taught”

Thanks so much to Brooke for giving me the opportunity to be an arc reader for this book🖤

Anabeth and Kieran (our FMC and MMC) are both grims, in their own ways - guiding animals and humans as they pass over to the afterlife peacefully.

Ana has been taught that her kindness is a curse. Kieran follows protocols, and is very clandestine. Their history is beautiful; the story is heartbreaking. The book is also left on a hugeee cliffhanger. I was not mentally prepared for the ending 🥲

So excited for book 2!

This book has such a good concept, and I’ve honestly been going back and forth between giving it 3 or 4 stars.

I really did enjoy the plot, but there were a few things that kept me from fully loving it. One of my biggest issues was that certain things were repeated multiple times. Since the first book isn’t particularly long, some of the repetition felt a little unnecessary and made the pacing feel slower than it needed to be.

That being said, I really ended up liking the characters by the end. For the first 40% or so I wasn’t very invested, and I didn’t feel particularly connected to any of them. However, the second half of the book was phenomenal. I loved seeing the character growth, the intense emotions they were experiencing, and especially the way they slowly found themselves being drawn back toward each other.

I was also a little confused about the bonded companions, although this could honestly be more my fault. At the beginning of the book, I was under the impression that the animals couldn’t speak because the first companion we were introduced to didn’t. Then a chapter or two later the companions started speaking (which was totally fine) but then they were also able to speak to other people (not just their bonded). I had assumed that once they bonded, the companions could only communicate with their bonded person. Again, that assumption was based on other fantasy type books that I’ve read, and I shouldn’t have assumed.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story, especially the second half, and I’m definitely interested in seeing where the next book takes these characters and this world.

This was an interesting read because it offered a unique take on reapers. In this world, there are reapers for both animals, Animalia Grims, and for humans, Mortalis Grims. The FMC, Anabeth, is an Animalia Grim who uses compassion to help animal souls pass through the veil when they cross over, which is a method that other reapers don't use.

While on an assignment to pass over an old stag in the forest, Anabeth encounters a dying human who stumbles upon her. She becomes determined to help him pass through the veil, despite knowing that she is not a human reaper which goes against protocol. She discovers that she can actually feel his human soul and believes she may be able to help him. Unfortunately, her attempt is unsuccessful, and she is eventually guided by the MMC, Kieran, a Mortalis Grim.

The soul Anabeth attempted to help becomes corrupted and begins disrupting the natural order, setting off a chain of events that plunges everything into chaos. Meanwhile, Anabeth has a nagging feeling that she knows Kieran, although she cannot figure out where from. After plenty of bickering between the two, they eventually uncover a deep and hidden history connecting them. Now, they must put their differences aside and work together.

I enjoyed this book very much! The author writes with vivid imagery and does an excellent job of painting a picture through detailed scene descriptions. I did feel that the beginning was somewhat disjointed and moved a little too quickly, rushing to get to the central conflict. Anabeth begins questioning herself very early in the story, before the reader has much background information to understand why. Once the premise was fully established, the story began to flow much more naturally.

There were a lot of emotions, twists, and events happening at once, which kept me engaged and made it difficult to put the book down (mostly in the second half of the book). In fact, I read the entire book in one day! Needless to say, it was an entertaining and imaginative read, and I am looking forward to seeing what happens next.

My Rating: 4/5!

This was such an interesting take on the idea of reapers! I really loved the concept of having different types of Grim Reapers for humans and animals. It was such a unique world to dive into, and Anabeth immediately stood out to me because of how much compassion she has for the animal souls she helps cross over.

Her decision to help a dying human—even though she technically wasn't supposed to—sets off SO much more than she could have anticipated. From there, things get increasingly chaotic, and I really enjoyed watching the story unfold and seeing how everything connected.

And Kieran… The bickering between him and Anabeth was definitely one of my favorite parts. Their dynamic starts off with plenty of tension and frustration, but as they uncover more about their shared history, their relationship becomes so much more complicated. I loved watching them slowly piece together what they meant to each other.

The world-building was another highlight for me. There was so much imagery and detail that I could really picture the different settings and the supernatural elements. The whole idea of souls, the veil, and what happens when the natural order is disrupted was fascinating.

I will say the beginning felt a little rushed. There was a LOT introduced early on, and I occasionally felt like I needed more time to understand the characters and the world before everything started happening. Once the main storyline really got going, though, I was completely invested.

The second half especially had me flying through the pages. There were so many twists, emotional moments, and unexpected developments that I had a hard time putting it down.

Overall, this was such an imaginative fantasy with a really unique premise, and I'm definitely curious to see where the story goes next!

If you enjoy reapers, supernatural fantasy, enemies-to-lovers tension, bickering, hidden histories, magic, and a story that gets increasingly chaotic as it goes, definitely add this one to your TBR!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5 stars

Well… this one hurt. In the best possible way. 😭

I was completely hooked from the beginning, but the second half was phenomenal. The story just kept building, pulling me deeper into the characters and their world until I was emotionally invested far more than I probably should have been.

There were a couple of chapters that were utterly heartbreaking. I actually cried on the train… sitting next to a complete stranger. 🥲 The writing captured the characters’ pain and grief so beautifully that I could genuinely feel it alongside them.

The FMC was a particular highlight for me. She’s strong, compelling and has such a unique gift, which brought a really interesting perspective to the themes of death, grief and what comes after. It added a depth to the story that I wasn’t expecting.

And then there’s the romance. 👀

The relationship between the FMC and MMC was subtle but incredibly powerful. Their connection develops gradually, with so much happening beneath the surface, and I loved watching it unfold throughout the story.

Their journey takes them through some serious highs and lows, all of which ultimately culminate in a devastating plot twist that left me staring at the page like… excuse me?! 😭

And now, naturally, I need the next book immediately.

My one little nitpick was the timeline. We’re told the MCs have been Grims for around a century, with the MMC having only been one for 13 months longer than the FMC. So the repeated mentions of his companion having been with him for centuries didn’t quite add up for me. A tiny detail, but one that kept niggling at me.

Overall, though, this was an emotional, beautifully written and thoroughly captivating read. I loved, I hurt, I cried on public transport… and I’m absolutely invested in what happens next. 🖤

**I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily

Rating 4/5 ⭐ This book was definitely out of my normal dark, Mafia, or unhinged romance that I typically gravitate to but I am so glad I finished. This was a beautiful POV of death and transported me to a whole new world full of animal and human Grims, the thin layer between life and death and a new take on what happens to animals and humans when their souls cross over to the "other side" kept me wanting to read more and more. The main characters are Anabeth and Kieran, their love story is emotional and raw and I found myself invested but the cliff hanger (yes there is one 😩) has me hoping the next book elaborates more on their love story from the past.

Anabeth is a complex character, she struggles with finding her true self, her purpose, especially as an Anamalia( animal) Grim. Kieran is a mortalis (human) Grim, a man of few words who follows the laws of the land in the purpose of keeping order. I love a great grumpy x Sunshine trope and these 2 definitely fit the bill. The plot is exciting and interesting, but the discussion of animals passing had my heart feeling a bit sad but it was relatable. The paranormal fantasy aspect of having animal companions was something new to me but Nyssara and Onyx were so different from each other but I found myself rooting for them and loving their deep connections with their Grims. The author's choice of words were descriptive, powerful, and emotional but many of them appeared redundant, however, describing the different planes between worlds was tough to imagine without the intense wording by the author, I appreciated this rather than seeing it as a negative. I would definitely recommend this book to any fantasy or paranormal book lover. Emotional damage caused by this book is in the high risk area🥹😢 God luck!

💀 ARC BOOK REVIEW 💀
Where Death Dwells — Brooke Eisen
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Where Death Dwells delivered such a unique, gothic, and wonderfully enchanting take on Grim Reapers. The world felt dark yet whimsical, making it the perfect atmospheric read for spooky season. And made me love it so much more!! 🖤

Anabeth is an Animalia Grim whose compassion sets her apart, while Kieran is mysterious and broody, —basically everything I like to read in a morally gray MMC. I loved the animal companions, forced proximity, slow-building connection, and emotional tension between these two as they were pulled deeper into a dangerous mystery.

This book took me on an emotional roller coaster without completely destroying me—and that is exactly the kind of emotional read I enjoy. I love when an author makes me genuinely feel the characters’ grief, fear, hope, and connection, but I don’t necessarily want to sob for hours during and after every book I read. Brooke Eisen created the perfect balance: emotional enough to keep me invested and make me feel everything alongside the characters, without leaving me completely drained.

The beginning took me a little time to settle into, and some parts I felt may have slowed the pacing, but once the story found its rhythm, I was completely invested. The second half brought the twists, heartbreak, tension, and excitement I had been waiting for—and that ending?! Brooke really decided to leave us suffering with a massive cliffhanger! 😭

Overall, this was an imaginative and beautifully atmospheric dark paranormal romance with fascinating lore, high stakes, and characters I’m eager to follow into the next book.

Thank you to Brooke Eisen for providing me with an advanced reader copy. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own. 🖤

This was such an interesting take on Grim Reapers. I loved the idea that there are different Grims responsible for guiding human and animal souls, and that Anabeth's compassion — something that should surely be a good thing — is actually what gets her into trouble.

Anabeth being an Animalia Grim was probably my favourite part of the concept. Her approach to helping animals cross over is incredibly gentle, and there's something quite lovely about the idea of them having someone there with them at the end. Then she tries to extend that same kindness to a human soul and, well... perhaps we should have listened to the rules.

And then there's Kieran. Dark, mysterious, grumpy, ridiculously strict about protocol — basically exactly what I'd expect from a Grim Reaper. I really enjoyed the tension between them, particularly as it becomes increasingly obvious that there's more connecting the two of them than Anabeth realises.

I did find the beginning a little harder to settle into. Quite a lot happens before I felt like I properly understood the world and its rules, so some of Anabeth's early decisions didn't have quite as much impact for me. Once the central story was established though, it flowed much better and I became far more invested.

There's some really imaginative lore here, plenty of emotion and a mystery surrounding Anabeth and Kieran that kept me wanting answers.

Answers were too much to ask for because THAT CLIFFHANGER.

Thank you to Brooke Eisen for the opportunity to read an ARC of Where Death Dwells in exchange for an honest review.

💀 Grim Reapers
💀 Lost Memories
💀 Childhood Trauma
💀 Animal Companions
💀 Forced Proximity

The story starts with Annabeth, our FMC, attempting to reap a horse, and we follow her through her duties as she carries out her role as a reaper. I genuinely can’t put into words the level of detail, compassion and love that went into the very first chapter alone, it had me sobbing. If only life itself could be so compassionate and loving!

We follow Annabeth until things begin to go wrong. The very compassion that makes her who she is ultimately becomes her downfall… and this is where our MMC comes in to save the day!
Kieran is everything you could want from a grim reaper — dark, mysterious and grumpy. Basically, all the best MMC traits rolled into one.

“Because I couldn’t stand the thought of losing you, little bird.”

CHAPTER 16… I have absolutely no words.

And the ending? Also NO WORDS.

I feel like if I try to explain too much, I’ll risk spoiling it for new readers, and honestly, this ending is so fantastic that you NEED to experience it for yourself, but be warned it is a cliffhanger!

The way this book has been written is just beautiful. It’s emotional, heartbreaking and so immersive that you genuinely feel like you’re experiencing everything alongside the characters.

And let me just say… as an animal girlie, Onyx and Nyssara are absolutely my favourites!

Please, please give this book a read because we NEED book 2!

3.5 stars rounded up to 4

Thank you to Brooke Eisen for the ARC of Where Death Dwells. I am not the type of reader who will give 5-stars just because I was given an ARC, so this review is all my completely honest opinions.

This debut novel is the first installment of a duology that reimagines the afterlife. The story follows Anabeth, a grim reaper for animals, whose compassion gets her into trouble, and Kieran, a reaper of human souls who must help her save the veil after her compassion leads to potential catastrophe. Along their journey to save the veil, we learn about their past lives, their trauma, and how they got where they are now. It is a paranormal love story with no spice (at least not in book 1).

I thought this was a good book, but you could tell this was a first novel and could have used a bit more polishing. It read a bit more YA than truly adult fiction, partly because the characters were on the younger side (as humans). There was some discontinuity which could be a little confusing and I felt that we could have used a bit more background story to make us care more about the characters and their love story. The language also got quite repetitive throughout the book. Along this vein, I don't like when multiple characters and POVs use the exact same phrases, since they should have distinct thoughts and personalities.

Overall, I liked the story and will definitely read book 2 to see how it all ends, especially since we were left on a major cliffhanger!

And her pa Heather @sponkles_reads . Death has always been a sore subject with me, but this premise had me curious. I read this with some reservations but the world she built in such a short of a novel is truly masterful. The way they treated death, and the reapers who are guides to the souls they reaped was done so with empathy and kindness all because of this one reaper Anabeth, who defied the rules. Imagining if this were real, that reapers could make it possible for someone to pass on with gentle hands guiding them, perhaps we wouldn't fear death as much. This story has me completely envisioning this world being just one of many possibilities of what meets us when we're meant to cross over... and I will cherish it deeply. I loved this book and cannot wait to find out what Keiran and Anabeth will do in the second book! Where Death Dwells releases September 22nd so be sure to pre-order your copy of this book.

Overall I quite enjoyed this story. It was a quick read but it held lots of emotions, starting right out the gate in chapter one.
As someone who's been there for this very thing it was beautiful to see it described this way, I felt like I was out in the barn with Ana and experiencing it all over again.

I really liked Ana. She was such a pure character and had a natural light about her.
I could feel her frustration for the constant punishment for having compassion. Why is doing the right thing always punished? I loved how much she cared and I hope she never changes that.

Kieran was a good character. He was mysterious and broody. I enjoyed watching him step out of his comfort zone and come to grips with a new reality.

I really enjoyed the mystical and mysterious settings and the unique grim magic. I did notice there were some inconsistencies with the timelines which left me struggling to figure out what time this story was supposed to be set in. First off, when they are human, they are using email and texts then they've been Grims for a century, so that would make it set in the future? It did not have a futuristic feel and felt like it was set in the present so it took me out of the story a bit because I just kept wondering where in space and time we were. Maybe time works differently for Grims? Other than that I was enamored with the story and I'm curious for the second half! I would recommend it!!

Right off the bat, the prologue HOOKED me. I knew I was in for it.

The magic system in this book is so unique, and the fact that the FMC has a magic system that is wholly her own? Hell yes! I ate that up.

I also absolutely loved the idea of a grim for animals. Such a unique and compassionate take on death, something so many people fear. It added so much heart to the story.

Brooke's descriptive writing and world building is brilliant. I could envision the forest down to the placement of the mushrooms. So atmospheric and immersive.

Character dialogue is pretty sparse in the first half, not a bad thing at all, just an observation. It helped add to the “alone” feeling of the FMC.

Now for the emotional damage. Chapter 15/16 absolutely DEVASTATED me. No spoilers, but get your tissues ready. And chapter 23? Complete emotional roller coaster.

The last half of this book is pure genius in the way it hurts you. Brooke gives you hope, then rips it away, just to give it back, to rip it away again and leave you on THAT cliffhanger!!

I was left gutted in the best way. If you love unique magic, lush and moody vibes, and books that will emotionally wreck you, read this!

Thank you Brooke Eisen for sharing the e-arc with me! It was an absolute pleasure to get immersed into this world you created.

Thank you so much to the Author for an advance copy of this book.

First and foremost, PLEASE if you are interested in reading this book look up your trigger warnings. There are a lot of heavy and dark topics mentioned and discussed in this book.

We follow our main characters Anabeth and Kieren who are both Grim’s, a magical force that is tasked in guiding souls to their final resting place. Anabeth is a beautiful character filled with so much conviction and compassion that you cannot do anything but feel and fall in love with her. Her journey throughout this book was heart wrenching and inspiring. Kieran is more of a broody and cynical male lead, who is like the yin to the yang that is Anabeth. The turmoil that their relationship has gone through had me by the neck. Through the flashbacks and his POV you can really tell the way Kieran yearns and cares for Anabeth.

The author does an amazing job of creating an atmosphere and energy through the book through descriptive language that shows readers the world in an engaging way that I could not put this book down once I started. I love how the story is driven by these characters and the decisions that they made, while the plot and conflict flowed with those choices. I cannot wait to see how the choices made in the last few chapters affect these characters in the next book.

FIVE PLUS STAR READ

If you are someone who likes dark romance, fantasy, and slow burns, this is your book. This book will 100% be a book that I will be yapping about for quite some time, and not just because it was my very first ARC read. Brooke hooks her readers from page 1. I immediately knew that this would be my kind of book right from the very start. This book will draw you in to the world of the In Between and cause you to fall in love with characters you never would imagine you could - grim reapers. Not to mention, you will be left on a cliff hanger dying to know what happens next! Brooke truly mingles the art of writing that draws you in and breaks your heart in the best of ways.

This book also highlights the dangers of compassion fatigue if you look just a layer deeper. While I am unsure if this was intended by the author, specific themes really spoke to me as a mental health therapist. The female main character will encourage you to reflect on the dangers and struggles that come with trying to balance the safety of rules with the risks of giving too much of yourself away in hopes that you can heal and soften the pain that others experience. One of my favorite quotes from the book is, "Compassion without boundaries leads to destruction."

Definitely add this book to your TBR immediately!

Where Death Dwells is a beautiful story about grim reapers, self acceptance, and a second chance at love.

I really love and adore the concept of this book, and having the MCs be different types of reapers (animal and human) was a brilliant idea.
The reason this book falls down to a 3-star read for me is because of how repetitive it is, and while the story has great pacing and is told through duel POVs from the FMC and MMC, the most interesting thing about the FMC, Anabeth, is her bonded death moth, Nysarra.
I also have some confusion about the timeline. Apparently they've been reapers for 100 years, including flashbacks from 100 years ago, but "centuries" is used at multiple points to describe the characters and their bonds.

However, I ate this book up in 1 day. It is a fast read, and leaves you wanting to know what happens next at every turn. The situations that the MCs find themselves in are really interesting and unique given Ana is an animalis reaper who attemps the job of a mortalis to bring comfort to a human soul in need, fracturing the veil they dwell within. I am happily impressed with how this book ended, leaving such a great open door to the second book in the duology, and look forward to seeing how it ends!

x Second chance at love
x Bonded animals

ARC Review!

A few mild spoilers! Forewarning!!

This book was such a beautiful, haunting exploration of death, compassion, and what it means to care for someone even when the world tells you not to.

Anabeth is a Grim whose softness and empathy make her stand out in a world governed by rules. Her connection to the souls she guides, especially the way she tries to make their final moments gentler, made her such a compelling character. She doesn’t simply see death as an ending. She sees the person, the memories, and the love left behind.

And then there’s Kieran Voss. A Mortalis Grim with an intimidating presence, a complicated past, and a perspective shaped by loss. His dynamic with Anabeth was one of my favorite parts of the story. Their opposing approaches to death create so much tension, but beneath that is a connection that slowly becomes impossible to ignore.

The atmosphere was eerie and emotional, with the corrupted forest, the veil, and the liminal spaces creating a world that felt both beautiful and unsettling. I especially loved how the story explored the difference between following the rules and doing what feels right.

A haunting, heartfelt read that reminded me that sometimes the most powerful stories about death are really about what it means to live.

Where Death Dwells was such a quick read for me; it was hard to put down! The slow burn romance was delectable & I loved how it was woven into the plot. It was hard to keep the tears in at times; she discussed topics like loss, grief, & mental health poignantly for this being a book about grim reapers!

The world-building was wonderfully done & well thought out. I loved the inclusion of liminal spaces & how they were described – it was so incredibly creative. They felt like the perfect spaces to have appear where the veil is thinnest. The familiars were a nice touch as well, Nyssara & Onyx were great additions as side characters; I felt that they were a great contribution to the story.

What a way to end this first book – if you read, be prepared for the ultimate cliffhanger! When Brooke Eisen releases her next book, I’ll be there. I need to know what happens next in the series; I will be looking forward to the release of the next book in later 2027! Thank you so much for providing me with an advance copy of Where Death Dwells – I am honored I could be one of the ARC readers for this wonderful first book of the duology.

ARC Reader
This story is told as a dual POV between Ana and Kieran. Two very different types of Grim (Reapers). Ana specializes in animal souls, when Kieran specializes in the human one. There are rules for a reason, and one very big one--- reapers do not cross reap. One day Ana finds herself breaking the rules and the results are catastrophic for the balance and the veil between worlds.
When I found the concept of the book interesting, I only really truly got locked in when Kieran appeared in the book. Ana wasn't a bad character, I just didn't vibe with her as much as Kieran. I love Kieran's companion better two-- Onyx is a good boy.
The book wasn't bad, but it is lack things for it to be a complete 5 out of 5 star rating.
The biggest question. How are Grims chosen? Why was Kieran made one when he died and Ana being made somehow broke the rules.
There are plot holes here.
I do like her writing style, it was descriptive and she is a good storyteller. However, it felt like the events (some more than others) seemed to dwell on longer then they should have. Another reason for the lacking of a star.

Welcome to the world of Grim, reaping, death and a little bit of love that spans over time.

Warning, this does end on a cliffhanger and will leave you a little emotionally wrecked.

The amount of compassion that we get to see with Anabeth throughout the entire book really got to me. As someone who just lost my mother, the prologue alone had me in tears. Nyssara, who is her companion, acts as her guide, and when all others doubt our wonderful Animagous Grim, Nyssara will have you cheering for Anabeth just as strongly.

Now for Kieran. He is a Mortalis Grim, with a beautiful black wolf named Onyx as his protector. We can see the pain in every action he takes. He clings to rules and procedure as a shield for all the pain he carries and the people he loves. He is rough around the edges, but he had me absolutely heartbroken for him.

This story was so worth the read! The characters, the story and the emotions pulled me in completely. And that ending?!

The author is a wonderful writer, and I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Thank you so much for the ARC!

This is a brilliant story about two grims with very different views on how the passage should happen. Anabeth through gentle compassion, the other - Keiran - through clinical efficiency. They but heads and don't see eye to eye, but turns out their connection is much deeper than that. Now they must work together for Anabeth to piece together their past and for her to piece back together the veil after a botched Mortalis passage.

What did I like?
- the world building was brilliant. I loved the descriptions of the Veil and Liminal Spaces and the Grim Hall. I loved how the reaping worked and death goes.
- The ending was wonderful and gut wrenching and unexpected. I did not expect her to absorb the Shadow Soul and it was a nice surprise.
- their past together was heart breaking and I really enjoy that it was described and why she had this connection to souls.

What didn't I like?
- the memory parts felt a little clunky.
- the characters were a bit one note - vibrant yes, but stagnant in a way if that makes sense.

Will I continue?
- oh hell yes!

Death has rules.

Compassion breaks them.

Now the In Between trembles, and one Grim’s mercy may unravel the world”

This is a very different take on the reaper. This book is dark, gothic atmosphere and whimsical all wrapped in one. And it follows more than one, you have Anabeth which is a animalia grim and then you have Kieran is mysterious and broody. Morley Gray and everything I love in a gothic book! This book took me on an emotional roller coaster. I felt grief, fear, hope and connection to the characters.

Kieran story hurt me in ways I didn’t think I was going to hurt. I think
His story line was my favorite. The lost his girlfriend then the ways that played out I was wanting so much more of just them. And the ending…. Had me clutching my hands over the sink, hoping that it wasn’t true. I do have to say I would love more background on the main characters. That is the only reason I didn’t give higher.

Overall this was a very unique storyline and I would love to see what else this author brings to the table. Btw I love the cover and that is what sucked me in.

✨ ARC Disclaimer ✨

Yes, this was an ARC.

No, my standards didn't magically disappear.

As always, these thoughts are completely my own. 🖤

I was sobbing. 😭

This book was absolutely beautiful and such a refreshing change of pace. I think I've become a little jaded lately after reading so much horror, so this was exactly what I needed.

The story follows two Grims and the history they share. It's heartbreaking, hopeful, and quietly emotional all at once. I really enjoyed the worldbuilding, and the relationship between the characters had me completely invested.

I'll definitely be impatiently waiting for book two because I need to know what happens next.

If you're someone who wants to dip your toes into fantasy but doesn't want pages of spice, this is a fantastic place to start. It's very character-driven, beautifully written, and proof that a story doesn't need spice to leave an emotional impact.

Gut-wrenchingly, heartbreakingly, beautiful! If you've been looking for a change of pace from Romantasy recently, this will break the cycle! A dark paranormal romance, with a fresh concept, incredible world building, creature companions, and earth-shattering emotional turmoil. The world building, the characters' roles in the world, and the magical signatures felt so unique to anything I've read before! Hats off to author for bringing some individuality to the dark romance space and to do it without any spice but to still convey that romantic connection?! This was so beautifully written and I can't wait for book two to hopefully stitch up some of these pieces that book one left behind! If you're looking for a read that will crack open your heart and leave you feeling every second of the emotional wreckage it puts you through, pick this up but PLEASE read the trigger-warnings! And how STUNNING is the cover art?! What a killer tattoo?!

I recieved an advanced copy of this book feom the author and i am leaving my honest review.
First i would like to say that you should go read it for yourself if it has caught your eye.
Second. I really hate that I couldn't finish this. It was good, and I'm sure it would've gotten better, but there was just something that made it really hard to keep reading and not get distracted by everything else. I couldn't get into it, even though I really wanted to know what was gonna happen, and if the MMC was ever gonna take his head out of his butt... please don't take my review to serious, if this book has caught your eye, go read it! Find out for yourself! I honestly never read reviews before picking up a book, I just see the cover, read the description and either go "yep, I want to read it" or "naw, not for me" and this book said yes, until it didn't.... again, I don't know why I couldn't get into it, but I'm not one for forcing myself to finish just because I started.

ARC Review from the author!

3.5 so we round up! The authors writing style is immaculate. Her verbiage and expounding on scenes and emotions was so flawless and beautiful. This was a great story emphasizing compassion and how important it is, even in the face of horrible outcomes.

The beginning of this book really grabs you like ok where is this going to go?? Then the back half really makes you feel and root for the FMC. The expounding on her grief, and torment of following the rules or not, is so precise that you can’t help but feel just like Anabeth does.

I enjoyed the author’s direction in this book. We got a present story line, with a backstory and memory scenes included. It didn’t feel rushed and instead felt seamless. Reading about the past and how Anabeth became a grim was gut wrenching. The author had me feeling down bad for these two only 137 pages in and they barely had any interaction in the book yet!! That letter though…..ugghhhh her opening that letter and her guilty thoughts afterward😭.

I’m curious where book two is gonna go and how the series will end, if Kieran can fix his mistake. Can’t wait!

My only complaint is that, while the scenes were detailed so well, they drug out a little. It would take chapters to finish a task, which is fine, but then made the stakes not seem as high. If that makes sense.
