Oepse Daisy

Rate this book
“Oepse daisy” kon net sowel “O bliksem”, “O gits” of “O magtag” gewees het, maar miskien is dit tyd om Juanita du Plessis in plaas van Jack Parow te speel. So sê Johan Bakkes.

About the author

C. Johan Bakkes

10 books13 followers
Prof Johan Bakkes is a qualified CA and lectures in Business Economics at the University of the Western Cape. He lives on a smallholding in the Paarl, and his adventurous spirit has taken him to destinations all over the world, the common thread being that these places are almost always off the beaten track!

Bakkes has garnered much controversy for often including offensive and exaggerated remarks towards members of his own family. Much controversy emerged from his book "To Hell and Gone" (2008) when he put forward the argument that one of his nephews should not have had the right to be born in South Africa. In the same book, he also expressed that members of his family "betrayed" South Africa in moving to Canada because of the crime and racial tensions associated with South Africa. These conditions were wide-spread throughout South Africa, especially after the South African farm attacks had begun in the mid-90's.

As young students we briefly shared a few moments during meetings or parties at university. To read an autobiography spread over several books, of Johan Bakkes, written eloquently and so honestly, had me wished that we all could cherish everything the way he did. He has a way with words, bringing a unique style of his own to the South African book scene. There are not many South Africans who can match Johan's travel experiences. Combine the multitude of countries he visited, the cultures he researched and enjoyed, with an excellent writing style, and his books become pure jubilation of words and language. He could have become an ordinary accountant sinking into oblivion and mediocrity, but did not. With the life choices he made, he set an example of what life could really be about if you are just willing to change rules for yourself! And boy, did he do it!
