Following the perilous escape from Caiphon island, four refugees find themselves drifting on the sea. Among them is the magician Shaw who takes responsibility for the journey, Viday Harjones, Burroughs Viklund, and his childhood friend Lana. They are taken to the greatest seat of power in the waters, a fortress embodied as a sea serpent.
Once there, the nature of the world and it's working becomes revealed. A climax to the hundreds of years of battle looms. The exiled pieces of humanity have grown equally bold and desperate on their archipelago. With the unprecedented invasion visited on Caiphon, the military mobilizes for a counter offensive. Mysterious forces prepare their pawns for the final gambit. On the point of the spear is to be Burroughs Viklund and his living staff, the axial tree, an enigmatic artifact said to carry the power to kill gods and write the order of species walking the earth.
Rather than standing around for the conflict to sweep them up, the refugees hatch a plan of escape. They seek out the abandoned city of Sagitarium in the Southern Reaches, a place so far away none could hope to find them. Even so. Many dangers await in the western continent. Those chasing after ghostlights often never return.
