Journal of the Undead: New York Outbreak

Rate this book
Struggling actress and full-time waitress, Cassandra Taylor, is having one of the worst days of her life. Rude customers, a cheating boyfriend, and a botched audition are just the tip of the iceberg. Her new neighbor, Ryan McCallistar, has troubles of his own but neither is aware of a growing threat in the underbelly of New York City. Contrary to what the media reports, their so-called flu epidemic is actually a viral plague turning humans into flesh-eating monsters.

Starting on the streets, New York’s homeless are a walking buffet for the reanimated dead. One bite kick-starts a catastrophic outbreak turning the dead into ravenous fiends, bent on devouring flesh from bone. As the infection spreads, people from all walks of life are doomed to a ravenous search for fresh meat. On the same day the governor declares a state of emergency, Cassie learns her grandfather is deathly ill and her family in Ohio begs her to come back home. Ryan vows to help his neighbor find a way to Ohio but to do it, they must escape the watchful eye of every guard employed to patrol the border.

Cassie and Ryan risk life and limb to escape the horrors in The Big Apple but that’s only the beginning of their journey. Can they endure the trek through a zombie-infested wasteland and survive the New York Outbreak?

Often times we'll read reviews that boast a book is captivating, unputdownable, a thrilling page turner, and all those exceptional praises an author wishes to see in a review. So I want to be clear...this book is all that and more.

I read, and thoroughly enjoyed the first book in S.G. Lee's Journal of the Undead series. Even being YA, it still sucked me in. Book two, definitely a departure from the tone of its tame predecessor, literally gripped me from the first page. And it only got better from there. I found myself dreading anything that would pull me away from its prose. I even brought it into the grocery store and continued reading as I shuffled down the aisles like a mindless zombie feasting on its pages like juicy brains.

S.G. Lee has talent that won't be denied. The author's love the of the genre is plainly evident in each sentence. I firmly believe this book has the opportunity to become a staple of the zombie niche, and it's got my vote for whatever awards it may be (and should be) nominated for.

Now, I need to be completely transparent and divulge that I run in the same circles as this author. We write in the same genre and their work is a fan favorite in the At Hell's Gates horror anthology project confounded by myself and Devan Sagliani. This has absolutely no bearing on my review, and trust me, even with peers, I'm brutally honest. Here comes the brutally honest part...

The cover art does not do the book justice. While it won't make any worst dressed book list, it also won't win best in show. This bums me out because more often than not, a book is judged, at least on first glance, by its cover. Luckily, though, a cover can't updated at any time, so my hope is that it will get a face-lift at some point.

But let's be real. If my only criticism of a book is the cover, then that book must be fan-frickin-tactic. And it is! Great job once again S.G. Your work continues to awe and inspire me. And a few times even make me wish I'd thought of an idea first!

Cassie moves to New York to become a famous actress and 8 yrs. later is still working in a diner. After what she thinks is the worst day of her life she meets her new neighbour Ryan. They become fast friends and then as their romance starts to blossom a full fledged zombie apocalypse begins. After many tense, dramatic and horror filled events they start a journey that will take them through many states to reach Cassie's family. On the way they meet the Evans family from Littleville who pass on keys to survival and an offer for a safe haven which will come into play later. This book has very well developed characters that draw in you and make you care how they manage the many obstacles in their path. I highly recommend this book and The Littleville Uprising by this S.G. Lee if you enjoy zombies and a very well told story. Way to go S.G, looking forward to reading more of your work.

A good read

A little slow to start but like a train gained momentum as it went. The character Cassie proved she was more than an airhead and The book more than just fluff, a reasonably good read.

I get so excited when I see S.G. Lee has a new book out. I loved book one Journal of the Undead Littleville. This one was just as good if not better. I love the characters the depth of the situations and reactions of the characters.I love the creativeness of how the two books were tied together. When and where their paths crossed. You have an aha moment when it takes place and an internal dialog oh yeah ,I remember when that happened in book one. It is nice to see the flip side of that interaction what was going on from the POV of the other characters in book two's end.S.G.Lee truly gets society and the many different perspective that make people behave the way they do.I gotta say I cheered when Desmond got what was coming to him. I was surprised by Vic.Well played with the use of Geezer Brigade. I was sad with what happened with them.Cassandra & Ryans chance meeting was good for both of them.I loved Deb's character. I also was wishing the best for father and son team Rich and Richard.Pick up your copy and get lost in this great story by S.G.Lee.
There were a few minor typos but nothing that affected the enjoyment of the story. It is a YA book so well done people of all ages will enjoy it.

Loved it!

I was reluctant about this book at first, not sure why, but now, I'm glad I got it. It's wonderful! I'm so glad about Cassie getting home, but the troubles and the pain of her getting there broke my heart! Read and find out what happens, you won't be disappointed.
