With a heavily armed space armada from the galaxy's most hostile race bearing down on all opposing life forms, Brigadier General David Steven Jefferson attempts a desperate maneuver--capturing the aggressors's home world--that could end the war.
Came across this book years after reading the first 5 books and decided to finish the series.
Rough read. In this final book, humanity is taking the battle to the home planet of the alien menace, led by Brigadier General David Jefferson. Jefferson has risen through the ranks and survived a horrific battle in the last book, “Death of a Regiment”, and now commands the invading force because of his “understanding” and “experience” with the enemy. Apparently, what doesn’t kill you gets you promoted. Story is very weak, very frustrating. Jefferson provides no insight into the enemy. To be honest, the military intelligence provides no “intelligence” about the enemy. There is absolutely nothing none about the enemy. The alien race is not even given a name. The building on the alien home world are just empty structures, the aliens, card board cut outs. I know almost as much about the aliens at the end of the book as I do at the beginning, which is nothing. This book could be written without Jefferson and it would have the same emotional impact. Maybe that’s the point. There should be no “I” in the military. It’s not about the individual it’s about the unit. Whatever the reason, this book fell flat.
The book did provide a break from more in-depth reads. And could be set down and picked up without having to “catch back up.”
