Alexis Alvarez writes romances - some are light-hearted contemporary romances; others delve into the exotic world of domination and submission.
Her female heroines are strong-willed women who are never push-overs, and who can hold their own in society and the workplace, but who are intrigued with the idea of kink and submission in the bedroom. Alexis writes with skill and poetry, creating worlds that are both dark and erotic and, at times, humorous and light.
Alexis is a writer, photographer, gourmet cook, former engineer, and mom. She likes other things besides BDSM fiction, and some of them include snorkeling, lemon bars, thunderstorms, and laughing so hard with her sisters and brother that her stomach hurts.
You can find Alexis at the website she shares with her two real-life sisters, who are also romance writers: www.graffitifiction.com
Writing about real life people into a novel is usually not recommended. Apparently Ava Grimaldi missed this day in Writers 101 class. At least she didn't use a person's likeness, make them evil and then kill them off terribly. There are authors who do that to real life family members (Brian Vaughan). Ava makes a worse mistake. She takes a man she sexual fantasizes about and has him starring in a romance novel. Not just any romance, but kinky BDSM erotica which it seems, he does do in real life. What is the first rule of Fight Club? There is NO FIGHT CLUB! What is it with people outing others in the BDSM lifestyle?
Granted, Ava did not know Damian Perez, gym owner stud muffin comes with whips and chains. Still, writing a real life person with all their characteristics without their knowledge into a BDSM novel just spells trouble. As the readers can predict, Damian finds out about her book. Regrettably, it is from his religious family members. Oh boy. Talk about a relationship killer. Ava's hope to start dating Damian derails before they can even hop aboard the dating train. This sets up for a delicious revenge scenario.
The BDSM in this book is HAWT! It's kinky without all the fancy accoutrements. Damian basically punishes Ava with meaningless sex and a taste of D/s. From a BDSM scene perspective, these are all easy scenario to replicate and can be a lot of fun. From a BDSM relationship between a Dominant and a submissive for a healthy relationship, it's completely a cluster. Ms. Alvarez does a nice job of showing how unhealthy a relationship can become due to lack of trust. She also gives a good perspective between those in the lifestyle and those looking in from the outside. Neither are wrong, it's all in the perspective and how one feels about it. When it comes down to it, the minute Ava's heart becomes mixed up in Damian's revenge fuck, heartbreak is imminent.
Readers will hurt for Ava yet understand Damian's desire for Ava to suffer. However, when it becomes more personal by having it shared outside the two of them, this humiliation is neither fun nor sexy. It's degrading and one feels bad for Ava. This situation is difficult to witness because it is realistic and can easily happen in real life. Sides are chosen and no one wins because two people "making two wrongs" cannot make a "right". The conflict and resolution are well done. Readers may want drop kick Damian or bitch slap some sense into Ava. Whilst readers may curse at Damian or feel that Ava deserved it, the end result is the same - readers are moved and they feel something. This makes the book more engaging and memorable. This kinky book is recommended to readers who enjoy revenge scenarios which turn into second chances.
Whew! All I can say is Damian takes Alpha male to whole new level! He is sexy and keeps Ava and readers quivering through the whole book. Every time him and Ava were together, I was riveted! The scenes were super steamy with an extra helping of kink. The many sides of Damian were plenty ranging from sweet, sullen, attentive, dismissive, and smoldering. At times I felt sorry for Ava but often times envious of her. I couldn't decide whether I want to kiss Damian, slap him or just cry over him. I highly recommend this book for readers whether you are a novice or an expert in BDSM, it is beautifully written and will blow you away!
I love this book, love the premise and the writing. I'm surprised it's a first book by the author, actually. It's fun and funny in parts, and sexy and hot in others and just an overall goods stroy. Ava is a heroine who stands out. She's definitely got lots to say to the Damian (LOL) and I really appreciate how she doesn't just accept, but states her opinions and thoughts. She is submissive to him, but he earns that and I love that.
I was expecting a fun little spanky book, and I got so much more! This is a treatise on the psychology of BDSM, the emotions, the power struggles, and the trust issues. What happens when a couple comes into a Dom/sub relationship with impure intentions and unequal power? It blows up. And this is the story of how Damian and Ava put the pieces back together again. How they got back to the pure love that attracted them to each other in the first place. But make no mistake; there are some steamy hot scenes in this book. And you will hate first one character, and then the other before you fall madly in love with both of them. This book is frustrating, emotional, sexy and I loved it! I found it un-put-downable!
This book was a combination of a love story and a how-to guide.
Throughout the story there was a lot of dialogue or commentary that reminded me of those PBS specials that run during the pledge campaigns. Though I highly doubt you’d find a show on “how to be a sub” on public television.
That said, the attraction between the two characters was off the chart hot and the storyline was interesting but the overall documentary feel was weighty and at times a distraction
I think that removing some of the bulk of the dialogue and focusing more on the storyline would turn this from 3 to 5stars for me.
Ava and Damián's story is so emotional, so overwhelming and intense, that at times it was almost painful to read on. The emotional chaos that both produce by entering into a relationship under incorrect premises is sometimes almost unbearable ... Thanks to good friends, a solution is found in the end, even if the road there is really rocky. Ms. Alvarez has created a masterpiece with this book. Not only did she give meaning, direction and depth to this emotional chaos, she also provides interesting insights into a D/s relationship and really breathed life into the protagonists.
I really appreciated the research and knowledge that was presented in " Return". I really identified with Ava, curious about BDSM, and wanting to play some. Alexis wants to present strong female characters and she did. Following as Ava worked through her emotions and desires was great. I will be checking out other books by Alexis.
So much more than what I originally anticipated! I knew this novel would be steamy but did not expect the emotional impact and the intensity of the storyline. Additionally, the interjection of cuteness ,humor and humanity make for a well rounded reading experience that you will want to repeat. Keep tissues at hand and be prepared to add Alexis to your follow list !
Wowza! This book was quite the read! I liked Ava and Damian from the start. Then I didn't like Damian...maybe a little, not so much, then alot. Poor Ava!...then, Lucky Ava! Well, Ava was a bit crazy, just sayin', but I couldn't blame her. Damian is HOT, HOT, HOT! Interesting look into a BDSM relationship, well done. I haven't read alot of this author's books...I definitely want to read more!!
Ava writes a book using the owner of her gym as her model. Damien is not too happy when he finds out about the book. He is so mad at her that he agrees not to sue her if she gives him 12 weeks of kinky sex. Seeing as she wrote about him and her in the boom doing all kinds of nasty stuff. She agrees but knowing that she would want more than he was willing to give. His bitchy ex is still around and Ava has had enough of her and her ways. They end up splitting up because of her and now Damien wants her back. But the trust is gone and he has to prove to Ava that he loves her and is willing to forgive her. Great story!
This story was exceptionally written. It made me laugh, get very hot and made me cry. It grabbed me from page one to the end. It wasn't just a book about BDSM, it had substance and made me think. I am now a big fan of Alexis Alvarez!
Loved this story. This story is about a writer of BDSM who has never had this type of relationship. Ava has the hots for gym instructor Damian and decides to let the fantasies in her head take place in her stories, will she regret it. I would highly recommend this story to others.
Enjoyed this story. Great characters, lots of exciting sexy parts. The indecision of Ava gets a little crazy, and Damian goes a bit overboard. Overall a good book.
