March 29, 2024"At sixteen Lukie Bishop clung to the present, committed intensely to her rural Michigan town, a tight web of friendships, and a way of life that she wanted to preserve, if possible, forever.
But inexorably Lukie is forced to confront not only the present but her past and her future as well. There is the old hostility between her father and her beloved Uncle Farnie that seems, mysteriously, to impinge on her own past. There is the growing understanding of her feelings for her closest friend, Billy Butts, the only black student at Zebron High, and the realization that what she thought was romantic love for Harvey Toles is really friendship complicated by a longburied guilt. There is graduation, imminent and bittersweet. And behind it all, there is World War II blooming in the South Pacific and threatening to shed its dust of gold memorial stars even among her classmates." Free to borrow from OpenLibrary

I don't remember a lot about this book because I read it when I was a teenager. I do remember liking it though. It was an interesting read that kept my attention. Wish I'd held on to my copy so I could do a reread.
