He smiles. Winks. Eyes glistening an evilness known to no other. And then… I lose everything. It takes a heartbeat. A silent promise. A guarantee that it’s all only just the beginning. Everyone has a story. Mine is not one I don’t want to remember. Deceived by those closest to me, I was thrown deep into a world of violence, corruption and trafficking. The dark, sinister world belonging to one Hector Florez, Mexico’s leading cartel boss. What he wants is control. What I crave is freedom. They say everyone has an angel watching over them, protecting. Me? I had my very own demon.
This book is part of a series: Little Doll #1 Crimson Desert #2 Laughing Eyes #3 Sofia #4
I was so excited to get this book, like stupidly excited. I have absolutely loved every book in this series so far, and just knew Sofia would be no different. Little Doll & Crimson Desert were the first 2 books in the series, and followed the story of Laila and Aiden, which was a powerful and addictive story. Then Laughing Eyes was different characters, it was a character who had shown up in the previous books, but now got his own story, Danny. That was also an incredibly intense story, which had me holding my breath pretty much throughout. It was dark, gritty and shocking, but most of all it was incredibly sad. So as much as I was excited for Sofia, I was really nervous and hoping there would be fantastic ending in store for all the characters.
Sofia follows the journey of another character who had shown up in the first 2 books. We didn't get to see a lot of her, but enough to wonder what had happened to her, and what her story was. Which is why it's incredibly important, for you to read the other books before this one. Each story links up in some way or another, and if you skip one, you will miss a chunk of an overall big picture. Plus, you seriously wouldn't want to skip any, they are all incredible.
So anyway, the story starts with 2 gorgeous sisters. So different from each other, yet very close. The youngest invites her older sister to come on a yacht trip, with her and her boyfriend, Alex. Although dubious, quiet and smart Marcela decides to go along. So on this huge, gorgeous yacht for the w/end, is where they meet another friend of her sister's boyfriend, Xavier. He is stunning, and mysterious. Obviously keeping a lot of secrets, but he likes Marcela and they seem to be quite attracted to each other. So the next couple of days are relaxing, chilled out, and full of chemistry and tension. What they didn't know, is that everything they thought they knew, is about to change. Their lives will never be the same. And not everybody will get off that yacht.
The story takes a serious change from then, and we are following just Marcela's story now. She is taken captive, and held as a sex slave to Mexico's leading Cartel Boss Hector Florez. We soon learn he is evil, twisted, and has literally no heart. Which is how he has made it so far up the Cartel food chain.
We follow Marcela through 4 years of captivity, and how she is treated and what she has to deal with, some of the people she meets, and how she survives in this Mexican mansion/prison.
What I found that I loved about all this series, what they had in common, was the sheer strength of the women in each story. Marcela was no different. They survive on sheer will and determination, even though they have no reason to want to. They have had things done to them, you couldn't possibly imagine, and it's enough to turn them in to an empty shell. Yet, they keep going. I thought Marcela was incredible, and read each page shocked, and glued to the pages, yet hoping that she would get her HEA, and her retribution in some way.
The last 30% ish of this story, is where it coincides with Little Doll, and Crimson Desert. And no you don't have to have read those books first, but believe me, you want to!! We learn what happened from a different perspective, and because it had been some time since I read them, I had forgotten the outcome of Marcela, and was desperately hoping everything would turn out good for her.
I was not disappointed with the ending. It was perfect, and I was so happy with how it all turned out. Just when you think things are going to go south pretty quick, it picks back up and is finished epically!!
Of course this whole series is incredible, because of the captivating writing style of Melissa Jane. She tells a dark and heartbreaking story, and doesn't leave any nasty bits out. We get the full picture, and are left to live it along with the characters. I always end up crying with these books, because I end up so attached to the characters, and want them to get their HEA, or justice. But another thing she does so well, is world build to perfection. I mean the detail that goes into this world of dangerous, twisted, Cartel criminals is scary real. Cartel storylines have become a bit of an addiction for me over the last year, and I would say The Bittersweet series, is one of the best that I have read. It's brutal, raw and dark, but it's completely addictive!!
If you like dark, gritty stories, that don't blow glitter over the ugly realities. Then Sofia (and the rest of the Bittersweet series) is an absolute must read!!
WARNING: If you've not read the other books in the Bittersweet Familia series then this review may contain spoilers. These books cannot be read as standalones and must be read in order.
This is Sofia's story who we first met in Little Doll. You may remember her as the woman at Hector's mansion who was in charge of getting the girls ready for the nights they were to be paraded in front of potential buyers. Now, she didn't come off particularly well in Little Doll in her dealings with Laila but this book really helps you to understand what she was going through and how the things she did she did only to survive. Some parts of this book are hard to read, Sofia went through so much that you can only admire her strength and durability. You get to find out how Sofia to came to be at the hell on earth that is Hector's mansion and it gives you a great understanding of her character. The events of this story occurred in Little Doll and Crimson Desert but obviously we see it from Sofia's point of view. I did find at around 70% in that because I knew what was coming my interest wasn't as piqued as it could have been but reading from Sofia's POV was giving me a different enough view point that I still enjoyed the story. I was very pleased with the ending and overall I have immensely enjoyed this series. I definitely wouldn't hesitate to pick up more of this authors work.
I went into this series thinking it's the same old story but let me tell you each side has a story to tell and a part to play ..... it was actually amazing
This is book 4 and the conclusion of the Bittersweet series. You need to read the previous books because not only are there spoilers, but the other books tie into this final one and you'll miss important details and not know the characters as you should at this point. This is Sofia's (Marcela's) story about how she came to be Hector's possession and about the years she lived in the Florez mansion.
Sofia's real name is Marcela and her sister was Sofia. They take a trip on a super yacht with Sofia's boyfriend Alex and his friend Xavier. For several days the group lounges around, swims and enjoys their time together. On several occasions, Marcela feels as though the others are hiding secrets from her, but she decides to ignore it and concentrate on having fun. This all comes to a tragic end when the yacht is boarded by unwanted visitors. There are deaths, drugs, Marcela loses her name/identity and her nightmare of becoming a cartel leader's slave begins.
I felt so sorry for Marcela. She was a wonderful character and even though anyone else would be broken by what she endured, Marcela never gave up on the hope that one day she would leave and have her freedom. Just like in Laughing Eyes, we are able to gain an entirely different perspective of books 1-2 by seeing the events from Marcela's eyes. She is not the cold uncaring slave you think she is and we now have a better understanding of her actions and attitude. Marcela lived through years of many unthinkable events and is treated horribly over and over again. Hector and Juan really are monsters. Once again I fell in love with Aiden and his protective and caring nature.
I won't give away specific spoilers, but I will tell you that this story continues after the scene where Hector and Juan are killed. (That's not a spoiler since we witnessed their deaths in an earlier book.) There is a beautiful ending, one that I could not have dreamed up to be better. Great conclusion to a good series.
~*~ Obsessed by books copy given in exchange for an honest review ~*~
"It was then it all dawned on me who he truly was. He was the face that would be my destruction."
And so the story comes full circle when the final player in the game reveals her cards. A deck filled with horror, sadness and all consuming pain Marcela's story completes this series in the most beautiful way. Her fate is decided by one decision, to accompany her sisiter and her new boyfriend on a business trip mixed with pleasure. Her choice to go and ensure her sister's safety forever alters the course of her life and signals the beginning of the end of her hopes and dreams.
Reading how the once full of life Marcela is slowly, painfully morphed into the cold and harsh Sofia we meet in the first Bittersweet novel is devastating. Her systematic destruction at the hands of Juan and Hector is stunningly horrific as the depth of their evils knows no limits. The continous rape, beatings and psychological torture Marcela endures makes her strength and courage admirable. The four years spent in the house of human trafficking changes Marcela and leaves dep scars on her soul. We relive the events from her POV and its satisfying when an opportunity comes her way to let out her deep seated anger.
The ending blew me away. Surpassing the events in the previous novels we learn what happens to our band of survivors. Their next chapter after the devastating events in the Bittersweet series. Can Aiden and Laila find their HEA? Has Danny buried his past once and for all? Can Marcela move past her time spent as Sophia to rediscover the woman she was destined to be before that fateful day? Sophia is another stunning read from cover to cover. I simply fell in love with this series devouring hungrily each one. I loved the characters, their interwoven stories of loss and hope.
“I was deceived by my own flesh and blood and by the man I had slept with. Anything I said now would only add fuel to the fire.”
5 brilliant stars!! I love this series and I love this author. Her books are gripping and horrifically beautiful at the same time.
SOFIA is 4th in the series and contains serious spoilers for Little Doll, Crimson Desert & Laughing Eyes. As well as serious spoilers, SOFIA contains EXTREME adult themes and must be approached with maturity. While this is a work of fiction, there may be cause for triggers in some readers.
Everyone has a story. For Marcela Ortiz, hers is not one she wants to remember. Deceived by those closest to her, Marcela is thrown deep into a world of violence, corruption and trafficking. The dark, sinister world belonging to one Hector Florez, Mexico’s leading cartel boss. What he wants is control. What she craves is her freedom. To survive, Marcela must overcome the demons who promise to destroy her and challenge fate to a story she has only dreamed of. SOFIA, the final instalment of the Bittersweet series is built on heartache, revenge and redemption. One unlikely group of people. One common enemy. Many stories.
This book is the final installment of the series and it was so amazing!!! I don’t want to give away too much so I’ll keep my review short and sweet!! This series was definitely dark from book 1 and book 4 was no different!! If you are sensitive to certain topics, this book isn’t for you. Although I’m sad this series is over, I’m happy with the way it ended. Well done Melissa Jane!!!

Sofia is the fourth story in the Bittersweet Familia by Melissa Jane and this one does not disappoint.
Marcela Ortiz's story is one you will not soon forget. She is caught up in a world where violence, domination, slavery, and horror become part of her everyday life. A life which she cannot escape, but a life she tries every day just to live through. She is strong, but even strong women have their limits and Sofia is brought to those limits often during this story. Her journey is tough, and extraordinarily sad at times.
This book starts out with two sisters going out on a fantastic yachting adventure. Marcela meets the gorgeous, Xavier and, of course, romance ensues. But not for long. There's a twist in the story and Marcela is taken captive by a Mexican cartel boss and her life is irrevocably changed as she becomes his sex slave. To taunt Marcela, he changes her name to Sofia and her life is no longer her own.
This is a brutally addictive book that you will be flipping the pages and before you know it, it will be over. I loved this book and five stars do not do it justice. I can thoroughly recommend it - one-click this read today.
I received a ARC from the author in exchange for a honest review. 4.5* read. This is the fourth book in the series and in my opinion you really need to read the first three books before this one to fully appreciate this book otherwise you wont get this book at all. Its hard to give a review without giving to much away so I'll keep this short and sweet and. this is a gripping, intense, dark suspenseful book that takes you on a compete emotional ride throughout and I loved every minute of it. It is a dark read and there could be some triggers for some readers. I was gripped from the first chapter with this book and is full of surprises. I'm not usually a dark book type of girl ( I admit I'm more of a soft center) but this book is so well wrote and its such a gripping series that the dark side of it just added to it for me and I loved getting out of my comfort zone. Well done Melissa on an amazingly gripping series that worked well on my dark side. Cant wait to see what else you write.
Must Read! This book is a must read! It is the fourth and final book in the series and I would highly recommend that you read the first three books before reading this one so that you can get the whole big picture, and truly be able to appreciate the story fully. You will love Marcela, she is a beautiful, strong character, and you will find yourself becoming emotionally invested in her and her happiness and well being. This book is suspenseful, dark, and gritty, and deals with some things that may be triggers to sensitive some readers. It is absolutely riveting and very hard to put down once you start. I was sucked into the story from the start and definitely did not want to put this book down. I don't want to leave any spoilers, but I will say prepare yourself for one hell of a ride. I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Sofia, 4th book in the Bittersweet Familia series, rocks! Just like the other books in the series, this book is full of surprises. In this book, it's Marcela Ortiz or "Sofia's" story. The opening of the book is great. It was heartbreaking and full of unexpected things. As the story goes, things get more interesting. To make my review and so that you'll definitely read the book, find out if Sofia will find her own hero and will she have the revenge she wanted. Ms. Melissa nailed it again! This book will rock your world!
**This book have sensitive topics, so if you're not into dark books....I suggest you skip it.**
Oh this book!! I wanted to read this book ever since I finished Laughing Eyes, the wait was totally worth it. This book is the perfect conclusion to the Bittersweet series. I highly recommend reading the first three books in the series before reading Sofia. Sofia is such a strong character and my heart broke numerous times for her. Melissa did a phenomenal writing this. The ending to this series was bittersweet and brought a tear to my eye, happy tears of course. I highly recommend this series.
FIVE Stars- I received an ARC for an honest review of Sofia (Bittersweet Familia #4) by Melissa Jane
I was dying to know Sofia's story and what an absolute delight to find out, that is until I read what this strong beautiful woman had to endure. Another phenomenal story by Melissa Jane that is dark, raw and full of intense emotion and pain. This series has become a favorite and highly recommend you start at the beginning of the series!

this is a great book. I love this 4th and finally book to the series. u did a great job. I hope u start another series cuz I can't wait for u to write more and me to read more. keep up the great work. it kept me through the whole book. I cried, yelled, laughed, and about pulled my hair out for what sofia went through in this book. but I loved every minute of it.
This book would have major triggers for those with a history of assault or abuse but it was well written and dealt with the subject matter in a simple straight forward manner
Ahhhh, Melissa Jane has struck again!! This author can write no wrong and Sofia is no exception. The only thing I disliked about this book was that it is the last of the Bittersweet Familia series, and that made me so sad. This author delivered a pull no punches set of interconnected novels that just took my breath away from start to finish and garnered emotions I have seldom felt when reading. Kindle throwing, gushing, crying….you name it, I absolutely felt it. In every single book.
Sofia goes back a bit in the series. The stern, apparently unemotional woman we meet at Hector’s gets to tell all, and it’s a story that needs to be told in order to tie those loose ends. There is reference to other characters in here and I would strongly suggest that you read the three previous books so that you get the whole picture. Sofia also contains spoilers for those previous books so please be aware of that. It’s a no brainer really, as all these books are brilliant and you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you started at the end.
“It took a breath. A blink of an eye before it was all over. A heartbeat to shatter two lives.”
Written in true Melissa Jane style this book captivates you from the beginning to end, and she really doesn’t take long before she throws you in at the deep end and drags you into that dark, gritty experience that I now recognize all too well in her writing. She does it so well; she wrings out the emotion in such a harrowing fashion that it is so difficult to put the book down. I love a dark read, and I particularly like one that holds nothing back. And that’s what you get in Sofia, just like the other three. The descriptive narrative that this author uses produces some pretty shocking yet striking and full on imagery and that is something so many authors struggle to get right. Melissa nails it every single time.
I’ve purposefully not rehashed the story of Sofia, I can’t do it any justice in all honesty and I don’t want to give a single thing away. All I can say is that this is a MUST read, and that this author needs to be taken note of. I thoroughly enjoyed this series and I am extremely sad it has come to an end. However I have forgiven Melissa for her sins, she utterly redeemed herself in the closing chapters, for all the pain that she has put me through over the course of this series. To say that this last book is “bittersweet” would be putting it lightly. I so cannot wait to see where she goes from here.
Sophia was a ★★★★★ending to one of my favourite series.
I would highly recommend that you read books 1-3 before attempting Sophia as it just rounds the series off. It also gives a lot of insight into the characters and demons that haunted our dreams in first 3 books.
So book 4 starts off with 2 gorgeous sisters , on a yacht and they seem to be having the time of their lives but the it little adventure soon turns bingo a nightmare and life as Sophia(Marcella)is about to change. ....her world is going to come face to face with evil ....her world is going to be introduced to Hector Florez. ..There us a special place in hell for sick !@#&*$¤ like him !
I found myself hanging my head in shame for feeling harsh opinions and thoughts towards Sophia as her story unfolded. This woman is tough, she's a survivor, she's a fighter and she's an inspiration. What she went through for 4 years at the hand of Hector and his henchmen make me sick to my stomach. Sophia deserves vengeance and her HEA ♥
Melissa Jane has a unique and honest style of writing. I'd highly recommend her books !!!
after falling in love with books 1 and 2 of this series i knew i had to read sofias story and i wasnt dissapointed. after the snippets you get of her in little doll and crimson desert, it was eye opening to see her story unfold..... never did i imagine that could have been the case. thank you Melissa Jane for sharing this story :)
Good story telling..HEA but Sofia went thru a lot to get there...you see how she ended up with Hector and her story for the last 4 years...toward the end when she said "I'm so sorry" tp Lilia..well not going to lie got a little teary eyed...
I thought this was a very interesting final book in the series. And it gives some insight on a character I never gave much thought to and tells her very sad and fascinating story that I, very much enjoyed.
