This is the first Houston history book to be written from the business perspective, where the stories behind the successes are told. "Houston Legends" contains extrapolations into business culture innovators. Each chapter features historical perspectives in several key industries in the area’s dynamic growth. Each topic is reviewed on the economic impact, the business contributions and the people involved and creative activities will be chronicled. Recurring themes include entrepreneurial spirit, business survival, strategies, growth and vision. The names, dates and events are intertwined with anecdotes, applicable to modern business. Common themes include giving back generously to the community, stages in the evolution of a business, creativity and mentoring the next generation of leaders. This is a methodical way of reviewing Houston history in terms of the pioneers and their legacies for free enterprise.
I took this book from the library, I started reading full chapter 7.... very disaponting to find out many racist facts:
Chapter 7 is a TIMEFRAME of important events in history, including sport events, creation of new companies, famous people achivements, opening of new business, relevant Natural events, etc.
How in this world the author missed to mentioned about Barbara Jordan and her Historical significance as first american woman elected to Congress. It was a monumental moment for Houston, Texas, and the United States. Her national Impact was beyond Houston, she became a national figure in civil rights and constitutional law, famously addressing the nation during the Watergate hearings.
In the same Chapter ... "The civil war. This is a classic and tragic case of two sides fithging for causes and not fully understanding the other side's motivations. the south saw slavery as an econimc factory and the only system of labor management they had ever known. The North saw aopportunities to champion humanity issues, underlying the threat of insurgence within our own nation"
- "not fully understanding the other side.."??? Really??? what is not understandable about slavery?? - " the south saw slavery as an econimc factory and the only system of labor management they had ever known" Really??? Is impossible to think that any human been at any time in history, could not see ANY other possible way to work ??? Really? Who will believe this!!!
This could have been a great, great book, but it was poorly, poorly edited. Repetitions and typographical errors abound to the point that their distraction becomes unbearable, unless you feel you're reading clips from sources all around that were just copied and pasted in the book. I did learn more about Houston and its legends but I couldn't disregard the fact that it must not have been proofread.
