Maggie James is a British author who lives near Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She writes psychological suspense novels.
Before turning her hand to writing, Maggie worked mainly as an accountant, with a diversion into practising as a nutritional therapist. Diet and health remain high on her list of interests, along with travel. Accountancy does not, but then it never did. The urge to pack a bag and go off travelling is always lurking in the background! When not writing, going to the gym, practising yoga or travelling, Maggie can be found seeking new four-legged friends to pet; animals are a lifelong love!
“I received a copy of this book from the author and Booklover Catlady Publicity in return for a fair and honest review, many thanks”
I have been struggling with the idea of writing a novel for a while. My husband is more than supportive. He pushes against my fears of failure. Maggie James addresses these fears head on and gives you a plan of action. She deals with procrastination and writer’s block. Not only does she advise you, she backs it up with links of sites she uses. She gives wonderful examples from others and even does a refresher of strong writing techniques. I feel much more confident and excited to start on this journey!
[I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.]
3.5 stars. Short and to the point, although on a basic level: in other words, this will likely be a useful and motivating read if you are quite new to writing and/or looking for motivation, but will not bring anything new to someone who's already studied several books about writing in general.
I think the author liked putting up this guide together, and you can feel it, as she puts the finger on exactly what one should take into account when writing a novel. Battling procrastination, finding a writing software (links are provided), not letting anyone kill your desire to write, how to start looking for ideas, the "hero's journey", planning or not planning, writing environment, self-publishing, advice about adverbs and active/passive voice, etc... A lot of aspects are covered, along with examples from the author's own stories, thus allowing to actually see how her thought processes went and how she got from her initial ideas to the finished novels.
(Side note: the author mentions the Scrivener sofwatre, as well as NaNoWriMo, a yearly "event" that has personally motivated me a lot in years past. For anyone who'd like to take part in November, "winning" (completing 50k words) entitles you to a 50% discount to buy Scrivener. It's a great software, and the discount makes it dirt cheap.)
As said above, while it's probably nothing new to someone with experience in that regard, this book's main interesting feature, in my opinion, is that it covers a lot of essential things to keep in mind. Someone with very little knowledge can easily start from any chapter, motivate themselves, then expand and look for more resources later, using this basis to delve deeper—either using the links provided by the author, or researching on other websites and in other books. As for more experienced writers, since it's a short read, it can still be useful if you're finding yourself into a writing slump and are looking for a nice reminder about how to get back to work.
A more developed version would definitely be a good addition. As it is now, I'd say 3*stars for me, but 4* for someone who hasn't started writing yet and needs to find a good place to start.
Write Your Novel is to the writer what a construction manual is to the home builder. It’s a terrific kind of blueprint with clear, simple instructions on how to find what you need and put it all together.
She starts with the assumption that if you ever had a sneaking desire to maybe, possibly write a novel at some far-off future point, then here’s a big list of ways you can start right this minute. You don’t have to sit down and thrash out pages of prose in long, uninterrupted stints of inspiration.
It’s not intended as a style guide full of writing and critical literary advice, just as a construction manual isn’t aimed at architects and home designers. That’s a related, specialist field, and although James offers some useful tips for aspiring writers, she directs us to other good sources for writing style and language but says not to let our lack of expertise stop us. That can come later.
In fact, she has links and recommendations for numerous digital tools and organising utilities and apps for everything to do with writing, from cataloguing characters to ideas for storylines. And many of these are free, so cost is no object either.
She’s light-hearted, but serious, and never lets up. No excuses! Use post-it notes, a corkboard, a notebook, a laptop, and write yourself notes on your phone when you think of something because you WILL forget.
You learn to create ‘snowflakes’ and 'mind maps' – those great patterns with spokes connecting and collecting all your thought bubbles and plot lines.
She writes for “pantsers” – those who fly by the seat of their pants and hope for the best – as well as those who are most comfortable with strong structure and complete outlines, breaking stories down into bite-sized paragraphs.
Everything is here to start building, from the tools you need to the number of bricks.
Just do it!
Thanks very much to the author and Booklover Catlady Publicity for my review copy of this book.
"All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them" -Walt Disney
This is the way Ms. James started out Her book and I thought it was very fitting. If we don't pursue them why have dreams.
I have always thought about writing a novel, I but never thought I could make it happen. I have always found an excuse as to why not to write. I had no idea how to get started, what to expect, what if it bombs, etc. Now after reading this awesome book I am more determined to do it than ever.
Ms. James gives you great advice and resources on how to accomplish your goal. When I decide to start my writing I will be using this book as a reference to help me out. A must read for those Who have an ambition to write.
Thank you booklover catlady publishing for allowing me to review this book.
Write Your Novel! is a great book full of hints and tips that will help aspiring authors. Set out in clear sections, it will show you how to plot a book and how to improve your writing. Written in a friendly supportive way, the author speaks from experience as she encourages new authors through each stage of completing their first novel. There are also useful suggestions about writing software and the resources which are available to make the writing process easier.
In the crowded ‘indie author advice’ market, Write Your Novel! stands out as a super resource to help new authors gain confidence and write their first novel.
I was given this book by Maxine Groves of Booklover Catlady Publicity in exchange for an honest review.
I have always wanted to write a book. I read, review and blog about my love of books and I have read a lot of books about...well...writing books!
I found this book easy to follow, not full of jargon and great for tips on various websites and tools to check out.
The author provides Action Plans at the end of each chapter to prompt you into finally putting pen to paper...or fingers to keyboard, whatever your preference really.
For anyone interested in writing their own book one day, like me, I would definitely recommend reading this for that little push to get your started!
First of all, a disclaimer. I received a free copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Maggie isn't the first person to write a book advising on novel writing. I'm sure she won't be the last. The first think I do when I check one of these titles out is to check the credentials of the author. Maggie scores in this area because at the time of writing this review she is receiving consistently good reviews on both Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk for her works of fiction. I haven't paid her nutrition books any attention. This isn't about self-help writing, it's about fiction - and that's what I'm interested in.
For me personally there was a lot of fluff towards the start of this book, but to be fair and objective what I considered 'fluff' might not be fluff for everyone. This title is written for the person who wants to write a novel, or has wanted to - but never got started. Her advice to people who have the aspiration, but not the inspiration is probably good advice. I faced some of the problems she describes when I started out. I maybe resolved them differently, mainly by being a pig-headed, selfish, single-minded person who if he decides to do something - does it irrespective of other people's feelings. That's perhaps a character flaw that can have it's uses.
The book is well-written and easy reading. I like the style in inserting examples here and there and disguising examples of writing as questions posed by potential authors - it works and it makes it a light, easy, read - as opposed to a textbook.
The strength of this title is really the later chapters for me. I use word and google documents to write and they are flawed. Having read Maggie's views on scrivener I may check it out. It certainly sounds useful. Her advice on prose, narrative, the passive voice, adverbs and dialogue is all good too. It's a chapter I'd book mark and re-read. I do use pro-writing aid myself and I have used autocrit. These are best used as learning tools and I'd still suggest an getting an editor and proof-reader.
An aspect of this book which I didn't like was Maggie's insistence on novels being 80,000 words plus adn being X chapters of X words. I write without rules. If I want to write a 500 word chapter to emphasize a short scene, I will. If my story is told and has come to satisfactory conclusion at 60,000 words, then that's a novel. If it needs another 30,000 words then it will be a 90,000 word novel.
She does list some useful resources too.
I'm currently in the process of desperately trying to finish my fourth Deathsworn Arc novel: 'Deathsworn Arc 4: Rise of the Archmage' and I will by trying to make some use of the advice Maggie gives here. I don't agree with her on planning. I'm neither a planner nor a pantser. I have a framework in my head and know what has to happen, but I pants to fill in the gaps. However my writing is driven by characters. Once I know who they and what sort of people they are, it's a matter of writing challenges for them. I have little control over how they will react though - because I have to stay true to them. They have to behave and think consistently, but also to develop and grow - particularly as their relationships with their companions change.
I'd definitely suggest this for someone who wants to write, but doesn't. It's well written, a good source of information and should help give you inspiration. Seasoned authors might find tidbits in here, but may find they already know most of what Maggie is trying to teach.
In a nutshell: This book is more than it appears to be.
We've all seen them. The endless help guides, many of them good, some of them just plain awful, others are middling. What's clear from the opening pages is that merely reading this book won't be enough. Of course, what readers will expect from this kind of book is one that is well written and easy to follow.
But Write Your Novel is so much more than that!
This book is simply bursting with great ideas. I thought I had a good writing system in place, but the Pomodoro exercise is excellent, and writers really should put this into practise.
There are things mentioned in the book that I cannot comment on even though I have heard about them and their merits - Scrivener, for example. Maybe I will take the plunge on this one day!
Other elements mentioned, such as NaNoWriMo - well I attempted this in 2014 and wrote 37,000 words in that month. The fact I did not complete the 50,000 challenge did not bother me, because I was working on other writing projects at the time.
But I can see the use of it as a motivational tool.
One of the things I liked most about the book was the use of inspirational but relevant quotes dotted throughout its pages.
This made more sense here than just a random Twitter or blog reference. It meant a writer could put the motivational quote into practise there and then.
I really loved how the author broke down pretty much every aspect of writing. The segment about
"You're a human being. you'll have been through joy and sorrow...." "...put these emotions into your writing and your characters." (para)
This is good. It may seem like common sense but so many stories I read are ruined because whilst some thought has been put into the story, almost zero effort has been put into the character creation.
There's too many points to really reference here, but I especially liked this one:-
A shiver of fear ran up my spine, making my hair stand on end.
As a horror writer I loved this, (not the line, but the example) but it is so obvious we can as writers write the same thing three times over in the same sentence, when one element would have sufficed.
The book doesn't stop there. The character breakdown is a little over done (political views may not apply to my characters, but may do to yours) but this is better than selling the character short.
Basically, if you are in dire need, or moderately dire need of getting that novel written, this book works as a guide, motivational support, an ass-kicker if you are slacking, and a deep resource guide to make your book the best it can be.
At just over 100 pages long it seems like it may be too short to have anything new to offer. I consider myself reasonably experienced at this writing journey and yet I felt I learned loads from this book.
Write Your Novel is by far the most comprehensive, informative, and detailed book on “writing your novel” and how-to-get-started book I’ve read. I’ve read dozens of “how-to” books, booklets, and articles for the beginning writer/author, and Maggie James’s Write Your Novel is the best!
I wish Write Your Novel had been available when I started writing five years ago. The information in Write Your Novel would have saved me time, trouble, and money. For the aspiring writer, Write Your Novel can jump start your writing dreams.
The author’s step-by-step, detailed approach puts the beginning author at the front door of writing, publishing, and marketing. Maggie James takes time to eliminate, one by one, the major stumbling blocks beginning writers often face. James uses a wide variety of quotes from others who have successively started their writing journey. I found this section full of inspiration and motivation.
Write Your Novel is a crystal clear blueprint or guide of specifics. The author leads the reader with “what to do next” assignments that are clear-cut and easy to understand. James follows her own advice and counsel. She practices what she preaches in Write Your Novel as evidenced in James’s popular psychological thrillers. Additionally, James uses her own writing (novels) to illustrate certain important points related to the writing craft and how she applied her own advice. The author shares openly professional and personal hurdles from her ongoing writing journey. All “writing secrets” are on the table.
An invaluable feature at the end of each chapter is an Action Plan chocked full of concrete steps readers can get started on immediately. This component alone is priceless!
James takes the reader behind-the-scenes as she lists and explains the current “tools of the trade” available to assist the would-be novelist. By sharing her thoughts on the “usefulness” of what’s on the market, readers will be able to make quicker and better decisions regarding what will work best for them.
In addition, the author includes a list of online sites (links included) and other resources for readers to consider in preparing to write those first words, paragraphs, and pages of their first novel.
If you’re serious about writing your first novel, follow the action steps in Writing Your Novel, and you’ll publish your first novel sooner than you thought possible! I’ve been writing for over five years, and I found additional ways to improve my own writing from reading Maggie James’s Writing Your Novel.
I was given a copy of this book, by the author, to read and give an honest review.
This is a very informative book, not only for those wanting to write a novel, but for those who have already written books and stories.
This book will help those just getting started and give them that push they need to put pen to paper. I did not realize how much goes into writing a novel, probably because I am not planning on writing one. I do have to admit that I will use some of the information from this book while reading and reviewing.
I think this book can be a learning tool for those that are already writing too. There are always new strategies and tools to learn about and implement into your writing.
So, if you are a writer, blogger, book reviewer, or thinking about writing a novel, this is a great book to help you get started and can give you many ideas and tools to use while writing or planning to write.
Maggie James has done an excellent job in finding the tools to use and in encouraging those to write.
I’m a fan of Maggie James’s well crafted psychological suspense novels. Her foray into non-fiction with “Write Your Novel! From getting started to first draft”, is exceptional in the crowded how-to-write and writing tips field, in its focus on building self-confidence and overcoming the self-imposed impediments to getting started. Its advice, derived from the author’s own writing journey, is practical, easy to follow, and logically laid out in concise chapters containing an “action plan” at the end of each chapter. The Chapters progress through “Ditch the excuses,” “Planning and preparation,” “Finding help and support,” “Dealing with procrastination,” to my favorite, “Improve your writing,” a must for novice writers learning the craft. It includes a primer on the important steps following completion of the manuscript, namely editing, publishing and marketing, and provides resources for further reading to improve language and creative writing skills, plotting, and other areas involved in writing, editing, publishing, and marketing a novel. Anyone who has wanted to write, but lacked the confidence or wherewithal to get started, “Write Your Novel” will not only encourage and guide you in taking that critical first step, but also provides the steps to get you across the finish line.
Write Your Novel! is a brilliant little book which takes you through every aspect of preparing and writing a novel, it also includes advice and information on editing and self-publishing once you have finished your first draft. For a relatively short book it covers a lot of information in great depth without being patronising or making false promises. The book deals with, among other things, procrastination and the possible reasons behind it, dealing with negativity from others, planning and preparation, time management, research and different types of writing software.
Despite covering so much and going into great detail about what to consider when creating characters, etc the way the book is written is more inspiring than off-putting. This is the sort of book that you can read carefully, dip into when needed and re-use many times and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to write especially those who feel they don't have the time or are not sure where to start.
This is a very good book for anyone dreaming of becoming a writer. It contains many useful tips and advice on software as well as on writing itself; dealing with planning, research and structure. I am more of an intuitive writer and don't plan so extensively my stories (maybe because I don't publish), but I can see the potential benefit to others, who could use it as a sound structure to build their novels on. It is written in easy and accessible way, the subjects are grouped and given step by step, without pouring all the info all at once. I have made some notes and with interest researched some titles in "Further reading" chapter. Overall, it is a great start if you want to write your first novel.
"Write Your Novel!" is as encouraging and straightforward as its title. The author's tone was encouraging throughout. I felt like I had my own personal novel cheerleader! (I might even start on that novel that's been rolling around in my head). The chapters were a quick, easy read. And with concrete action steps at the end of each chapter and lots of very practical ideas, this was no fluffy book. I like that Maggie James stressed solid ways to get it done, while also taking the pressure of publication off the table. So whether you want to write for publication or you just want to finish your memoirs, this book will encourage you to get the project done.
This was a very good and helpful read for anyone that is interested in starting or is currently writing their own book. I will be honest. I am full of useless nonsense that rattles inside my brain all day and I have considered writing a book, but have had no idea where to even begin. Now I know where I can start.
This book is basically a how-to with very in-depth instructions- a manual if you will. It will tell you what you need to know, how to find it, and how to put it all together.
You are given several helpful tips, links, recommendations that help you organize and categorize your ideas, characters, plots, story lines, etc. Having a good starting point is key too. Whatever you need to get you going. Don't be afraid if you have a ginormous wipe erase board that takes up your whole living room, 5,000 post-its for one chapter, etc. be prepared.
The book is easy to follow with her helpful tips. (Its not like your high school calculus book)
Write Your Novel! is the most comprehensive book on writing that I have read in a long time. In this book, the author not only tells her readers the best tools and techniques that work for her, but she tells us what works for other authors as well. The most important lesson to gain from this book? There is no right or wrong way to write a novel as long as you DO IT!
James provides a list of valuable resources and action steps to help you on your way along with encouragement for people like me who can't seem to find the confidence to just sit down and write. The book never gets "preachy" and it becomes obvious early on that she really wants to help. There is no hidden agenda behind Write Your Novel! This book is designed to save time and reduce the stress that inevitably comes along with writing your first novel.
If you're like me and have always dreamed of becoming a novelist, read this first then go forth and conquer!
Write your novel is an amusing and informative book to get you started with writing. If this book had been available ten years ago I probably would have published my first book much sooner. Maggie James is very motivating and she gives sound advice and steps to getting over excuses and publishing. She discusses the lack of confidence and criticism most any new author fears and how to seek out positive support. Each chapter has sections about setting up an action plan. Step by step she walks the reader through how to get started on writing from motivation, software and technology, planning, setting deadlines and more. She gives sound tips about word choices and how to write a strong novel. And even includes a section about marketing. I meet people all the time that ask, “How do do it?” or “I have this idea for a novel…?” If your one of those people this is the book for you.
Excellent book for anyone toying with the idea of writing a novel. Lots of useful information and advice and a really good section dealing with the reasons why many of us keep making excuses and never actually sit down to start. The quote "Don't die with your novel still inside you" (Dr Wayne Dyer) certainly made me think. This is a well structured guide to all you need to get started on your very first novel. It is a quick read (I read it in an afternoon) and has plenty of useful links for further reading.
The questions in this book were very helpful and as an author I question myself often about why do I write? It's not for money, not for popularity, but because I enjoy creating a story, relieving the thoughts in my mind. I recommend this book to all authors.
First book I've ever read about writing, and it was very informative. I learned a whole lot, and feel more capable after reading it. He makes it sound really easy. Can't wait to start!
Write Your Novel by Maggie James is a straight to the point DIY book. She has kept it short and sweet, with no unwanted or thoughts which are out of place.
It is true, for wannabe writers, the very thought of penning a novel is taxing. The need to generate a voluminous number of words is capable of stressing one out. And yes, at times, due to one not being very tech savvy, it does require writing and typing, rewriting and retyping. Besides that, there are a few budding writers who want a template to follow to the T. This book is a blessing in disguise for them.
Undoubtedly, numerous books have been written on how to be a novelist. However, this book is a winner because it is like a basic checklist that people aspiring to write can follow. It is simple, effective and brings out the Basics.
P.S- I received a copy in exchange of an honest review from Booklady Catlover Publicity. Thank you Maxine.
This book is excellent for beginners. It gives the necessary tips needed for getting started, generating ideas, defying writers' block..etc It basically prompts you to make the time for writing, commit to the process, and to never give up. If you are someone who keeps postponing writing because you have no time for it, you think it is a tedious job, you have criticism phobia, or you are not sure whether you want to get published or not, this is the right book for you. However, it might not be of any help if you have already started and need some aid with writing dialogue, describing settings, filling plot holes, characters and characterization..etc If this type of help is what you are seeking, search for a different creative writing help book.
If you are about to write a novel for the first time, this is the book for you. I wish I had it to read when I first started writing years ago. It tells you what to do about preparing a novel, finding time, where to get ideas to grammar issues. I think I shall use this to help my author clients when I help them write
