I can't remember the last time I read this sort of book and, sadly, this wasn't the one to tempt me back to the genre. It was ok but the pacing seemed a little off, with some chapters following on immediately and others leaping ahead by years. There was nothing hugely original about the story either.
But saying that, it was a 'nice', uncomplicated read, with one character you love to hate and one to root for. And I was struck by the difference in setting up a home then, where you borrow everything and save up, to now, when you just go out to get it! And it had a happy ending to leave you feeling happy.
An enjoyable read, although the ending was possibly too hurried. A young lass has a very sad life having married a charmer who was escaping his village. She makes the most of her life, and in the end meets a man who will treat her and her child well.
