DARKNESS FALLS (A Detective Nathan Parker Novel Book #5) by James L’Etoile is another edge-of-your-seat police procedural/crime thriller featuring Detective Nathan Parker with the Maricopa Sheriff’s Department. While each book in this series centers around a new criminal investigation, this series has main characters that I feel are as significant as the plot and continue to evolve in each book. I suggest reading the series in order of publication.

When Detective Nathan Parker is called to the scene of a double homicide in an isolated trailer, at first glance it appears to be a tragic but not uncommon drug related murder. As he and his partner search the trailer, a familiar backpack is discovered. It belongs to his adopted son, Miguel. Now it is personal and Nathan must discover if everything he believes about his son’s life is true, even as he believes Miguel is not telling him the whole truth.

Miguel becomes a suspect in the murder investigation with DEA and ICE involved which could lead to Miguel losing everything. Nathan must deal with rogue DEA agents, crooked members in his sheriff’s department, white supremist biker gangs, and anti-government militias to fight to not only save Miguel but his pregnant wife, too.

This story has a fast pace and tension level that will keep you reading well into the night. Mr. L’Etoile never shies away from controversial and/or difficult topics that are related to our southern border and immigration. Money, power, and corruption, and all the alphabet agencies give this plot plenty of twists and surprises along the way with an ever-increasing sense of apprehension. Nathan needs the assistance of all his friends to solve this case and protect his family even as he faces a betrayal too close to home.

I highly recommend this thrilling addition to the Nathan Parker series and cannot wait for more!

James L'Etoile NEVER disappoints! He has very quickly become one of my favorite authors. This is the 5th book in his Detective Nathan Parker series, but it can be read as a standalone. I absolutely loved this one and the whole series!

A double murder brings Detective Nathan Parker of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department to a drug lab in Phoenix, where evidence found at the scene points to his son, Miguel, for the distribution of illicit designer drugs and murder. Parker knows there is no way his adopted son had anything to do with it. It's up to him to prove Miguel's innocence. As he starts to dig he discovers a border militia group called Night Watch. They want to stop illegal border crossings and control the drug flow. They're leaving a trail of violence and even a local politician is using them to influence an election. Parker's family is in jeopardy and it's a race against the clock to ensure their safety. Will Parker be able to bring down the militia before more people start dying?

I can always count on this series for an action-packed thrill ride. This book was fast-paced, and there was never a boring moment. The stakes were high and the tension was intense. There was a militia, corrupt politicians, illicit drugs, family drama, and found family. The investigation was definitely intriguing. This book was suspenseful, twisty, and exciting. A truly entertaining read that had me fully engaged. I HIGHLY recommend adding this one, actually the whole series to your TBR🩷

Darkness Falls by James L'Etoile is a great thriller featuring Detective Nathan Parker. It is a crime thriller, specifically book number 5. This book features a new investigation with a double homicide at a trailer. It is a drug related murder but the surprising thing is a backpack is found belonging to his adopted son, Miguel. And Miguel doesn't know how it got there but he is maybe not telling the whole truth. And now it is up to Nathan to protect his son and also his pregnant wife, Linda. The story is fast paced and you keep up with many aspects like the DEA and ICE members who come in and try to put the squeeze on Miguel and Nathan. And great news you can read this one as a stand alone book folks! This was an excellent read with twists, a great plot, and well written characters! I highly recommend the Nathan Parker series if you love a good police mystery!

Once again, author James L’Etoile immediately pulls readers into the latest crisis in which Detective Nathan Parker finds himself embroiled. In a scene reminiscent of the first episode of Breaking Bad, Parker arrives at the scene of a double homicide. Two young men were killed in a Phoenix drug lab that was housed in an old travel trailer. But there is nothing humorous about it. One of the decedents was known as the Birdman. He wasn’t just a run-of-the-mill drug dealer. Rather, he was “a connoisseur – a brand ambassador of pills” guaranteed to deliver an exquisite high. And those pills were in high demand on the local college campus. A pill press and bespoke plates embossed the Birdman’s signature Blackbird logo on each pill, fetching a sales price of five dollars.

Parker and his new partner, Barry Johns, are dispatched to the scene to begin investigating the killings. Who wanted the Birdman dead? And what was the motive? Was someone intent on taking over his lucrative manufacturing and distribution business?

Parker is not prepared to deal with a piece of evidence he finds at the crime scene. He spots a blue backpack that looks oddly familiar. Although it is near the body of one of the victims, it is apparent that it was placed there after the victim was shot because there is no blood spatter on it. The tag on the shoulder strap bears a name. His adopted son, Miguel’s. It is one of the backpacks purchased by the Immigrant Coalition where Miguel works with Billie Caron. The Coalition provides assistance and services to newly arrived immigrants, and the backpacks are often distributed containing needed supplies such as food and toiletries. But inside this particular backpack, Parker finds textbooks and notebooks in which he recognizes Miguel’s handwriting, as well as Miguel’s phone. The backpack also contains two baggies of Blackbird pills. Soon, Miguel discovers that his car – in which he left the backpack the previous evening — has been stolen from the driveway of their home.

“What the hell was Miguel’s backpack doing out here? Was he here when these two were gunned down?” Parker is baffled because he knows that Miguel would never be mixed up with “these kind of people.” But he’s well aware there are people in his past who would willingly plant evidence in order to set Miguel up to be criminally prosecuted for crimes he never committed.

The case’s political overtones are quickly revealed. The captain directs that key pieces of evidence be handed over to Lieutenant Carter who is assigned to Professional Standards within the Internal Affairs division, even though there is no rationale for personnel in that unit to inject themselves into the burgeoning investigation. But Carter, who was not promoted to captain, is endorsing William Coleman for sheriff in the upcoming election instead of the current officeholder. Not only is Coleman an outsider from Pima County, rather than Maricopa County. He was forced to resign from his position as a lieutenant when he was accused of using a militia group known as Night Watch “as his own private border patrol to intimidate migrants. There were rumors of more aggressive action.” Recently, there have been an increasing number of violent incidents perpetrated by anti-immigrant groups. Coleman seems intent on appearing as the more viable candidate in the approaching election by making the current sheriff appear weak and ineffectual, unable to control the flow of drugs or immigrants into the county.

And Miguel, along with Billie and her son, Armando, are well aware of the threat posed by Night Watch and other similar groups. The Immigrant Coalition regularly receives hate mail and threats, and the groups have been regularly attempting to recruit members on the college campus. Some have gone so far as to establish fake border patrol checkpoints in order to harass and intimidate immigrants. The spokesperson for Night Watch, identified only as “Thumper,” has publicly blamed the Immigrant Coalition and other organizations for the influx of undocumented immigrants across the Mexican border into Arizona. Miguel notes that manifestos published by the militia groups are being cited by political candidates. “There’s a whole new anti-immigrant groundswell building. We can feel it.”

Billie has a history of actively facilitating and aiding with border crossings, but swears she has focused her efforts solely on the work of the Immigrant Coalition, especially since Armando has been living with her. (His parentage and history were revealed in a previous installment in the series.)

In short order, Parker and his pregnant partner, Linda, experience firsthand the kind of abuse of power that Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents who are aligned with Night Watch are capable. They force their way, sans warrant, into the home in an effort to apprehend Miguel. For reasons that only gradually become clear, someone is intent on framing Miguel to use both him and the Immigrant Coalition to further their anti-immigrant agenda.

But Parker will do whatever is necessary not just to protect his family, but to ensure that justice is meted out fairly and commensurately. That means finding the killer and unraveling a tangled web of alliances formed for the purpose of advancing political careers and agendas.

Each book in the series can be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel. However, reading the five volumes sequentially makes for a richer experience, allowing readers to get to know L’Etoile’s characters, understand their histories, and appreciate the depth of their relationships and struggles. It also reveals L’Etoile’s growth as a writer because each subsequent installment is arguably better than the last.

Each novel is deftly constructed. The steady, even pacing gradually accelerates with L’Etoile ramping up the danger Parker, et al. face as evidence is discovered, theories are proven or disproven, surprising revelations require his characters to pivot and devise innovative tactics, and inevitable showdowns play out. At the center of every installment is a complex plot comprised of dubious and often hidden motives, scheming, treacherous collusions, political machinations, and the highest conceivable stakes. L’Etoile’s main cast of characters – Parker, Linda, Miguel, Armando, Parker’s colleagues, and, of course, the irascible Billie Carson – are menaced by various enemies. L’Etoile always explores contemporary issues. The thorny, ongoing issues involving the U.S.-Mexican border, dangerous unauthorized crossings into America, cartels trafficking both drugs and human beings, and gang violence have all figured prominently into the books featuring Parker.

But with Darkness Falls, L’Etoile has skillfully and effectively elevated the story because he has shifted the focus of the threats away from Parker (primarily, if not entirely) to Miguel. And in doing so, Darkness Falls is even more emotionally resonant, compelling, and fraught with tension than the previous volumes. In the prior installments, Parker met and bonded with Miguel, helping the boy escape the gang that murdered his family and taking him into his home as his foster son. Their bond has deepened and flourished over the course of the series. Parker has truly become Miguel’s father in every meaningful way. Now in Darkness Falls, he is a parent whose child’s bright future and very life are at stake, making Parker empathetic and relatable (for readers who are also parents) at a deeper level. Of course, it isn’t just Miguel that Parker is worried about. Linda is seven months pregnant, so Parker is anticipating the birth of his biological child, as well. He also takes steps to protect Linda, even though she is trained and capable of taking care of herself. For Parker, there are heart-wrenchingly believable moments of sheer terror, nearly uncontrollable anger, frustration, panic, and desperation. Parker’s travails make for a tense, un-put-down-able tale and readers will find themselves completely invested in the outcome.

Moreover, L’Etoile further explores the relationship between Billie and her son, Armando. He and Miguel consider themselves brothers, and L’Etoile’s depiction of the ways in which the two young men interact and look out for each other is thoroughly credible.

Ultimately, L’Etoile bravely takes the story in an unexpected, shocking direction that will leave many readers stunned and confounded. Hopefully, the next volume will be released soon.

Parker is thrust into a riveting personal battle to save his family.

Darkness Falls is the fifth book in author James L’Etoile’s riveting Detective Nathan Parker series, and its main character is locked in the ultimate battle to save his loved ones. Called to a remote drug lab and the scene of a double homicide in an unsavory corner of Maricopa County known to law enforcement as “Tweaker Heights,” Nathan and his partner, Barry Johns, discover one of the bodies is that of ‘The Birdman,’ a mysterious and, until now, elusive drug supplier, whose product has been all the rage among the more affluent college students and clubgoers in the greater Phoenix area. But smack in the middle of the crime scene, Nathan finds a familiar blue backpack, filled with the college textbooks and cellphone of his foster son, Miguel.

The underlying political goals driving the action make for a shocking motive. A county outsider with ties to an out-of-control private militia, the Night Watch, wants to win the coming election for sheriff, and drugs, migrants, and illegal immigrants are hot topics, both locally and nationally. The story is an absolute page-turner as Nathan and Barry try to get in front of the plans of the manipulative candidate and his cronies, who have infiltrated not only their own department but also the local offices of critical federal agencies. From the start, the partners can’t be sure who to trust or who is leaking vital information to the bad guys. The plot has shocking twists and turns, and I was quickly and deeply drawn in by both the suspense and the relatable concerns of a parent with grown sons.

While all the series books have been cases with deadly personal ties for Parker, this one manages to up the ante, involving both Miguel and Linda, Nathan’s pregnant love interest. This story hits on so many parents’ nightmares with Miguel becoming the target of powerful but hidden forces, his son’s complicity in the danger, and the senseless deaths of several young students barely into their teen years. Nathan doesn’t want to believe Miguel is involved, but the clues are not adding up in his favor. It is up to Barry Johns to be the more detached, uninvolved investigator, leaving Nathan to do what he can to find who and what are really behind the murders and the influx of deadly contaminated drugs into their community. Nathan has been a target before, but with his son in the crosshairs and a new baby on the way, the stakes are so much higher than ever before.

I recommend DARKNESS FALLS to readers of thrillers, mystery, suspense, and especially fans of the previous novels in the series.

Detective Nathan Parker has a big heart. He is well acquainted with the kinds of people involved in illegal border crossings - both those with good intentions and those with criminal intent. When his adopted son becomes a suspect in a murder investigation, Parker is determined to root out the truth about the murder, the drug operations, and Miguel's involvement, whatever that might be. Parker confronts obstacles at every turn, with local politics and inter-agency conflicts further complicating the situation. As the story unfolds, there are plenty of plot twists. The pace steadily increases and tension builds as Parker and his family become targets of the bad. Illegal immigration is a hot topic in America today, and the author does a remarkable job highlighting related issues and impressing upon the reader the importance of not taking everything you hear at face value. A well-written and engaging read.

This author knows the genre he writes about. I felt as though I was in the scenes with him doing his investigations with him. He has a way of writing that is so realistic that I got immersed into the story. This is book 5 in the series, but I did not feel like I needed to read the previous books. I want to read them to read more about these characters. One of the things that I got out of the story was that family in number 1. Detective Parker stands behind his son and still does his job. This is a great book for people that enjoy the television show Law & Order. Fentanyl, ICE, a pregnant wife, corrupt politicians, and a militia are a few reasons why this book is so fast paced. This author is definitely going on my tbr pile. I can not wait to see what other crimes Detective Parker has to solve. I am giving this book a 5/5. I was given a copy, nevertheless all opinions are my own.
