Firstly Congratulations for the huge success of "The Deliberate Sinner"...That book was beautifully written....
Now coming back to "Mistress Of Honour", I must say that the title of the book is simply mind-blowing...
This book reveals the hardships n sacrifices made by Indian armies and their families in order to serve our nation..From Potnis bravery to Pansy's misinterpreted ideologies described in the first part to their selfless sacrifices for the country
(Being Pansy's raising Rihana alone and losing her second child to Potnis losing his dear father and Friend Shamsher in a war)
From Granny's losing his husband to Kabir's gratitude towards Shamsher and Potnis family...
From Rihana's courageous decision to Advik's patriotism for his country...this book is a emotional ride full of breath-taking moments..
Liked :-
:-.We as a normal citizen follow Bollywood actors as our superhero's often neglecting the fact that the men in uniforms are the real heroes because of them only we can sleep peacefully at night...Grand Salute to Those soldiers.. Author has beautifully expressed the sacrifices made by Indian army in order to give us comfortable life by risking their own lives..Commendable Initiative has been taken by the Author as this aspect was superbly Highlighted..
:- When Rihana takes a courageous decision of her life, that part almost gave me tears...
:-And this amazing book ends with a thoughtful line “War was finally over, with a heavy loss of lives, each leaving scars with a hidden story.”

Drawback:-

:-Love fails to hit my cords, i know from the patriotism point this book is bang on but as a reader i feel the romantic aspect was lacking to certain extent as both the love stories were scattered..

P.S:-A light read exposing the dark and sad side of Army men and their families..

Potnis & Pansy are on two different sides of justice. Not even on the same page. Not even having the same take. But it's something that gets them together and bonds them forever. Potnis is a man of duty and honor and Pansy a hapless victim of misinterpreted ideologies. Years later Rihana is also bound by a sacred oath to be part of nation and be part of circumstances which later on change the course of life for her. Advik & Kabir coming along and tagging her to undertake a journey different from the usual path of comfort. So what will come out as a winner? Love or sacrifice? What Potnis & Pansy will go through and how Rihana will handle it? That's what the story is all about.

Man in action is a man of honor. Life of army people is no less than a nightmare yet their sacred vow to be in service for the nation let them put it upfront and makes all other comforts of the world secondary. Family, love and emotions do not bound them. It's the life of duty that keeps them going. Depiction of army and their crusades of past revive the memories. The duty bound men and their grueling operations from the Blue Star to LTT E all finding place in the story. It's not imaginable. It's heartfelt from the author. The sense of pride setting in while turning page by page.

The book loses out when it comes to love. The stories of both the generations are scattered and are not able to cope up with the demands of the story. The author needed to put in more efforts to let love be more pure and surreal. It loses out to valor, honor and sacrifice and gets overshadowed completely.

All in all the book demands attention as it spans back decades and let readers live through the tough times of our country and soldiers. It is meant to be given a fair glimpse of what was in line and how was it achieved. it never bends the fact to suit the needs. Leaving it raw and gruesome at times to feel the ultimate effect. It owes us nothing rather owns our minds. The book lapses into simple notions of love which don't lap up the exact emotions as bravery and fail to complement the sensitivity. A bit distorted at that front. The book is a honorable sacrifice and a memorable ensemble.

Mistress of Honour spins the yarns of a tale of love that includes two generations of the same family. First is the story of Potnis and Pansy, who met during an Operation. Their love gives birth to Rihana. Advik enters Rihana’s life and changes it completely. But after Potnis and Pansy’s story – Is Rihana ready for a relationship where she will always come second to the country? And what effect will Kabir have on Rihana’s life?

The most important part of this book that shines through is the reflection of the lives of Indian Armed Forces. The lives of the people who serve our nation and their partners are depicted in a beautiful manner. It is a difficult life for both the person in service and for their spouse. For the people in service, they hold their lives in their hands and ready to sacrifice it without a second thought – it cannot be easy to do that. And for the spouses, it is the never ending tension of not knowing whether their partner will come back home that night and always coming in second to the country. The amount of dedication and sacrifice, the service calls for is paramount. Hats off to the people who show that kind of commitment and are ready to sacrifice everything, including their lives. In India, we really need to show our support such people who give up a lot for the service of the country. And this book is a way to give a small glimpse of what they face and what they give up.

I loved the characters as they were very individualistic and each held their own in the story. With two men in the Indian Armed Forces, you would think that they would stand out in the story. But Bhaavna Arora has done a beautiful job in portraying the strong women who stand by their men so that they can serve. Pansy and Rihana are just beautiful and strong characters that show us the sacrifices that a woman makes, however indirect it may be, to help serve the nation. The story was narrated well. Keeping in the difficult parts and yet telling it in a graceful way by balancing the sacrifice and the passion just perfectly. The plot is simple and mostly predictable, yet it did not let me put down the book.

This was an interesting and emotional journey…

The book starts from the uneventful journeys of 1984 -1999, 15 years and the shift in the life of an army officer and his family. However the end is what touched my heart and every word of it written was true and can give you goosebumps. Hats of the the spirits of life and patriotism of the men in forces.

Personally this was an interesting and emotional journey. This was not my first read with stories depicting life of men serving defense services and their families turmoils but this definitely is one of the most beautiful and strong creation which provide us with an honest and moving insight into what it means to be a soldier, and more importantly a soldier's family.
Pansy and Rihana are just two most beautiful and strong characters that show what it takes to keep a bonds intact, the extend of sacrifices that a woman makes and how the wives of those brave men living under constant threat are truly the 'Mistress of Honour'.
Nothing would hold you back from falling in love with carefully built characters along with some beautifully expressed thoughts.
What it shines through is the reflection of the lives of these men and women and emotions from love courage, humor, romance and sacrifices which have been put up extremely well. Particularly the bond shared between between Shamsher and Potnis.
For me most part of the story felt like a complete facsimile, stories I have personally heard over and over and evoking memories from this time of life.
I once asked an army man isn't it difficult, this constant fear of life, loneliness and most importantly this separation?
He smiled and said, not at all, think about all the anxious waits and meetings afterwards, excitements that overflow, and living a life far beyond a regular one.
Always remember there is a popular saying in army "No news is good news" and it becomes your faith in life.
I can relate to all of this now much better than I did it then.
Like it said "Every soldier needs the memory of a woman to return to, to fight his bet battle. It gives him reason to stay alive and return home victorious”
A heartfelt thanks to the author and her team for letting me gain a perspective. Best wishes for the book!

The book is an exciting love story which has been embellished with sacrifice and pain.
An army officer and a woman named Pansy fall in love in quite unusual circumstances and have a daughter named Rihana. Rihana lives the life of a daughter of an army officer and ends up repeating the history with Advik. The plot of the book is created around major events in Indian history like Operation Blue Star, Civil War in Sri Lanka, Kargil war etc.
Through this book, the author provides a deep insight into what it is like to be a part of life if an army man. After reading this book, I found out that the author belongs to army background too and that explains how she was able to deliver this part so nicely. We rarely realize the gravity of situations like war for we don't actually fight, army does. And it is the families of army people that go through excruciating pain. The book is packed up with emotions and would really make you cry because of the sorrowful moments. It all seemed so real!
The narration style of the author is nothing but unique and perfect. You feel exactly what you should be feeling while reading different words, while going through different kinds of situations.
Everything has been well expressed and also written in a gripping manner. The book is a page turning novel and at the same time, a quick read. You can and you would want to complete this book in one sitting. I did.
The book might talk of love but it isn't just a love story. It is a lot more than that... it makes you realize how tough it is to in army, how tough it is to deal with death...
This book is a must-read. Each word in the book has been carefully woven to put the reader into a trance that doesn't break until you turn the last page and sigh for it ended! (and then shed tears... )

fast-paced narrative novel, the story line is full of passion for all - dreams, love and country. It’s a combination of all elements -drama, honour, passion, patriotism, love, sacrifice, friendship and trust under one roof. The author takes the reader to a roller coaster ride of a soldier’s life. It spans across two generations and embraces the Sikh Riots as well as the Kargil war within it and brutality of wars. It was just amazing. I can’t say about others, but I personally loved the way it has been written. I believe it’s worth one read for sure.

The story describes the real life of the soldiers. The author beautifully portraits a soldier's love towards the country. She also proved that love does not vary from time to time and the true love never fails,

🪖 You might come across some books that are so soul-filling that after reading them you feel a sense of satisfaction of having read and experienced something great! Well, this book just did that to me :)
--
🪖 Potnis is an able captain in our Indian Army. During his stint at Operation Blue Star, he meets Pansy in unusual circumstances and knows he has met the love of his life. Their passionate romance leads them to their beautiful mistake, Rihana. Being the daughter of an Army man isn't easy and Rihana struggles during her growing days.
--
🪖 Advik is a wayward boy from a broken family. To get away from his depressing childhood he turns to women. History repeats itself when Advik catapults into his schoolmate Rihana's heart as smoothly as he conquers the skies as an Indian Air Force pilot. Rihana has her own reservations about falling in love with a duty-bound officer. Will Rihana remain a mistress to Advik, for whom his country is his first love? Or will she be able to make a place in his heart that is second to none? Where will their unbridled love lead them?
--
🪖 Kudos to the author for writing an unusual love story where bullets and hearts dance together. I loved how she had detailed the various war operations, the near-death experiences of various characters, the sufferings of family members whose loved ones are so far and serving their nation first. I'm someone who loves history and this book is set during some of the worst wars of our nation! I could feel the sweat and pain of our soldiers as they safeguard us, but no words can console their families' losses.

🪖 I'm sure this heartbreaking saga of love, courage, and sacrifices will leave you asking for more!

Well you might already guess from its description that it's the old age rhetoric of patriotism, but what it can help you is critically observe the mechanism and process of this humbug Self-pity of family lives of ignorant and uneducated wives (maybe the author herself identifies with it) sowing the seeds of stupid ideas about who army serves and where there really is a gap between army and state, free of caste or not eh? Well a dalit might say that it's sometimes better to die than live a life of manual scavenger or a farmer. How lucky then army is comparatively. You have to understand that author is only buying myth of some of stupid majors and hasn't even an empirical investigation into it. It's a naive and ordinary piece, which is meant for mass consumption, and not 'educated' people where education also doesn't mean procuring degrees like the author boasts about. What a waste of money, but it gives you fine description of process of stupidity and rhetoric becoming embodied. I am surprised that it has got some good ratings, but that is because literature was converted into an arena of mass consumption. NO SURPRISE IN THAT!

Seldom do we realize that the air we breathe freely comes at the cost of the soldiers that stay vigil at nights and at mountainous terrains where breathing freely itself is a privilege. For most of us living in the cities, who are used to complain for anything and everything, it is not surprising to be completely unaware of the struggles that the soldiers & officers face on the borders away from their families. For those of us specially, Bhaavna Arora delivers all these and more, coalesced with special dose of romance through 'Mistress of Honour'. Whether it is the love between Potnis and Pansy, or between Advik and Rihanna, the author takes us through the phases that every adolescent mind with go through when it sees a person that his or her heart will want.

The bravery of the soldier Potnis during the 1984 riots and how the same terrific operation seeded a sapling of love through Pansy, and the romance that happened later, solemnizing into a marriage - all this is beautifully narrated by the author. Shamsher is the best part of this novel - the wit that he expresses during his stay and the help he does to Potnis talks a lot about the epitome of friendship. Advik's and Kabir's relation adds to the friendship tales. The hardship of a women (mother, beloved, wife or daughter) associated with a soldier or a military officer is well explained through various subtle scenarios.

The chapters that deal with NDA will surely inspire many people who want to pursue a career in the Indian Defence Forces. Not only, it delves deep into how the NDA prepares the students to treat country first, but it also teaches a very important lesson - if you want to enjoy the roses in the garden, you have to be prepared to meet with thorns - the same thing that Swami Vivekananda said - Purity, Patience & Perseverance brings you honours! "Yes, Sir!" - those powerful two words mean a lot for these cadets!

For those who are in their 20s or early 30s, there is no way we would know the reality behind the 1984 riots, the LTTE operations that India supported during late 80s. Even the Kargil war that happened in 1999 would have made into our knowledge (to me at least) only as a significant news but not as what it happened in reality. The amount of research that Bhaavna has done to give us all these details, blend it with stories of Potnis, Pansy, Shamsher, Advik, Kabir and Rihanna is quintessential. The author has even embedded NSCN in her book, and the readers will be able to appreciate the insurgency that India & Indian Army face from NSCN and ULFA every day, thanks to the recent attacks on Indian Army by NSCN and the revenge attacks by Indian Army by entering the territory inside Myanmar. 'Right or Wrong is based on which side you are in' - What better line could explain the terrorists and the army that are fighting each other for their own cause.

Rahim's chapter slows your reading pace a bit (and could have been avoided as it side tracks IMHO), but Advik's training at NDA & Rihanna make sure you will continue through the book to enjoy it fully! And, how would the parents allow Advik and Rihanna to go out just immediately after their engagement, and the way passions flow instantly to consummate their relationship even before the wedding is a bit difficult to accept. The ending (which I am not going to divulge) is what some or many of us would have expected differently, but I feel it is BOLD & BEAUTIFUL!

I wouldn't say "If you are a patriot, read this book!". Instead, I would like to say, "If you want to understand how tough it is, not only for the soldiers, but for their wives and beloveds - the sacrifices the latter make, and humbly accepts the fact that they cannot be the first love at any point of time to these soldiers and officers, but they can only remain Mistresses, but of course with lot of honour, you must read this piece by Bhaavna Arora which is beautifully woven with romance, drama and perfection!"

The Design-

The first thing that I wish to tell you about this book is that it is a product of labour. The connect that the author has with the storyline is purely visible. I picked up the book and the first thing that delighted me was the wonderfully done cover art. The bokeh at the back cover had a mesmerizing feel to it. The blurb had a hauntingly painful tone. Talks of coming 'a close second' sort of ring in old memories in the mind. The right kind of wistfulness is evoked by the overall feel of the book cover.

The Setting-

The drama has major historical events that shook the Indian subcontinent running in the background. In that way, the book draws inspiration from many other such pieces of literature already on the shelves. The Operation Bluestar, the IPKF operation on LTTE in Sri Lanka, they all make appearances in the storyline. The story begins with Pansy and Potnis- to star-crossed lovers meeting amidst flying bullets and dying people. A certain Hindi film vibe cannot be denied here.

The author is a Shobha De fan and that may be the reason why the book hits you right in the feels. Still, the nitty-gritties of the army operations covered in the book, for example the one in Assam against the ULFA terrorists are pretty close to reality. The research behind the book is self-evident.

The book should appeal to those who look for simple stories with an emotional value. The author has not tried to create a literary masterpiece. The book is high on drama, sex, action and other basic components of a racy thriller. Unlike thrillers though, this book has a purpose. The well deserved glorification of the Indian armed forces runs like a ribbon across the pages of this book, tying it all together.

The Plot-

The story can easily be divided into two parts. The first part is about Potnis and Pansy and their struggles while in the second half, their daughter Rihana's journey on the path of attaining her destiny takes centre stage. There are army operations, love affairs, selfless sacrifices interspersed throughout the novel. Heroism is displayed in the pages with the depiction of defence personnel's personal sacrifices and acts of courage.

The Characters-

Potnis is an army officer with a sense of duty. His love for Pansy comes a close second to his love for the country. Their daughter Rihana has seen a lot in her growing years and is wise beyond her years. These make for cardboard 'good' characters with less scope to improvise. Advik is the yang to all this yin. He is carefree, promiscuous and untamed. He is also Rihana's love interest much to the dismay of her sworn brother Kabir. All the characters are likable and there are no obvious villains except circumstances.

The Language-

The language is kept simple and minimal army jargon is used. The novel is well researched and makes for a believable read.

I would give the book 3 stars out of 5. An additional 0.5 stars for the ease of reading. I could finish the book well within four hours.

Final verdict- 3.5/5

Mistress of Honour begins with an introduction of the life of a brave captain in the Indian Army, Potnis. The book gradually introduces the reader to the dedication of a soldier towards his duty and how his family stands strong even in the toughest of times supporting the brave soldiers’ morale while praying for their well-being.

The beauty of the story lies in rational, open-minded thinking by all characters at every situation in life. Though, there have been moments of weakness, but the well-defined characters have been bestowed liberty to lead their lives with immense self-respect and integrity. This particularly holds true in the wonderful way the author has evolved the female characters in the story across three generations.

The yarn of love and patriotism that’s been knitted in the backdrop of Indian Army, helps the reader get a clearer picture of the lives of soldiers right from the time of their admission in NDA. Picturesque narration of the rigorous training they undergo and the difficulties they face in their careers both during war-time and at peace, often gifts goosebumps to the reader. I wish to congratulate the author on covering many key operations of the Indian Army (Operation Blue Star, Fighting militants in Assam, Helping restore peace in Sri Lanka and also the Kargil war) in a soul-stirring connection to the plot.

The language is simple and narration lucid with careful editing guiding the smooth flow of the story in this unputdownable read.

The book has a predictable ending with the protagonist, Potnis losing importance abruptly towards the last third of the book. At many points I felt the children in the plot were wielded with unusual maturity at their tender age. Students of class tenth and twelfth have been projected to deliver motivational lessons which can be seldom realized with the promptness (shown in the plot) by impressionable, young minds of the age Rihana, Advik & Kabir have been shown.

Nevertheless, the book beautifully shares an insight into the hardships, commitment and dedication of Indian soldiers while celebrating the strong women who stand by the men on duty. I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a breezy read of stories inspired by real life heroes connected wonderfully in the backdrop of Indian Army.

Often it so happens that we get hypocritically patriotic. Singing songs of valour, flaunting fancy dresses of army men and posing with toy guns for photographs is all that we would have done during childhood. ‘MISTRESS OF HONOUR’ is meant for those who can see the ‘Indian Army’ beyond this bubble. Years ago a dear friend of mine was selected for the NDA. We were so proud about his feat and a whole bunch of us were at the railway station crying and bidding good-bye but alas he was back in a week or so, and now every time I meet him I still picturize him with this thought “What if he had chosen to stay?” I do not know if he regrets his decision, personally I do. What I realized with this experience was that our army is not for the ordinary. This story with its various characters and circumstances just reinforced this belief of mine.

"Either I will come back after hoisting the tricolour, or I will come back wrapped in it, but I will be back for sure"

-Captain Vikram Batra, Param Vir Chakra-

Every time I come across this quote of the Kargil War hero, my heart swells with pride. I was reminded of this while I read the book, especially the epilogue section which very well justifies Rihaana’s brave decision and the title. Inspired by true stories of the Indian army Bhaavna has tried her best to go beyond the borders and inside their homes. A lot of things happen in about two hundred pages- love, friendship, patriotism, passion, sacrifice, trust, courage, humour, romance, sex, passion, drama, war and peace; making this a good one time read. At some places however I did feel that too many things were happening very soon, the story line moves quick before a reader can develop any connection with the characters. A lot of ingredients in an already boiling pot, maybe this was intentionally written to show that men of army are as normal as any of the citizens of our nation. As corollary, we think of the men of the army for selflessness, don’t we? What was commendable for me in this story was the approach to the members of the Indian army, their kith and kin, their hardships as well as their sense of content. To lead such a life, well it’s a blessing whose value most of us do not know.

PS: A heartfelt thanks to the author and her team for letting me gain a perspective. Best wishes for the book!

Just a month before I had chance to read her debut book “The deliberate sinner” published by srishti publications Such a wonderful book after that milestone i hear the news from her Facebook page about second book titled by “Mistress of honour” published by penguin. First i have to tell Bhaavna arora ‘s writing style was impeccable & mature and it will give treat to every reader ‘s eyes. I truly admired her writing style. Story revolved around the Indian Army man‘s life. Author clearly described the both Dark and bright side. “Army” without them protection we can’t live happily hear. They are struggling in border fighting against with suspicious terrorist with faith, power and strength for protecting the country in vice versa they are also Human Even they had able to fall in the “Love”. In armed force service difficult to balance the relationship they were almost in the state of dilemma. These are all the "theme'' clearly defined through the Potnis and Pansy ‘s Character. Story Plot was divided in two parts first half of the book was mainly about Potnis and Pansy & second half was around Rihana and Advik . Author’s characterization and storytelling was flawless and idealistic. Once you engaged with book you can easily flip the pages because of her story narration timeline and complete page-turner. Story was delineated fully with the mixture of emotions and love, war, missions & operations. Overall Great and Good book You won't be disappointed after reading and must to say she deserved again through with this book Sure I will follow her future work .I recommended this book to all and every avid reader. I would like to give 4/5 stars to this book -

The story is about the fear, courage and longing of two generations for their beloved who put their life in peril to serve the nation. The first half focuses on the feelings and dilemmas of Potnis, an army officer and the latter half deals with the emotions of his only daughter, Rihana who also chooses to marry a soldier. The book throws spotlight on the soul-stirring fact that for a soldier, nothing is above the unity and integrity of the nation, not even his family, not even his life.
Taking into account the rating given to this book, I bought it expecting it to be a wonderful read but I was disappointed. Although the author has paid attention to details, she has failed to string together all the facts seamlessly. The writing is stilted and most of the time it feels like reading a report rather than a story. There is abrupt change in the plot and in the line of thinking of Potnis so many times that you wonder whether the author has even sorted her thoughts. So many questions remain unanswered. The book needs a thorough editing so that phrases like 'Potnis and his team were in the second team...' do not spring up on unsuspecting readers. Also the author could have built a more comprehensive tale around the protagonists, particularly Rihanna - about her career, her life, her wishes and her ambitions.
The only thing commendable about this book is the way it highlights the trials and tribulations of not only our soldiers but their families as well. Hats off to the brave souls who make sure we spend our lives with our loved ones even at the expense of their lives and agony of being afar from their loved ones.

Although the stories of bravery and valour of the soldiers in the Indian Army are not unknown to us civilians, we barely ever know what goes on behind the scenes of the well-oiled, immensely effective machine that the army is. Bhaavna Arora's book attempts to provide us with an honest and moving insight into what it means to be a soldier, and more importantly a soldier's wife and succeeds considerably. Mistress of Honour revolves around the Potnis family and describes in brilliant detail the life of Deepak Potnis, Armyman, friend and husband; Pansy, army wife and mother and their daughter Rihana, who has known the tough life of a soldier all her life, but is fated to fall in love with one and have her heart broken. Where the book succeeds is in giving us civilians a moving portrayal of the rigour and hardship involved in training for the Army, the tremendous strength and will required to make tough choices to leave family and friends behind when deployed in the field. Furthermore, it is a touching portrayal of the wives of soldiers; their courage, resilience and the ability to cope with the life of uncertainty and danger their husbands live. Finally, it is a story that highlights the sense of friendship and camaraderie that develops between soldiers in the army, and how it shapes them for life.
Mistress of Honour was a quick, fast paced read and I enjoyed it. Read it to learn more about the incredible and brave lives of our soldiers, and the tough choices the women in their lives make.

Army officer Potnis and his wife Pansy meet under turbulent circumstances and gradually fall in love, bringing a "beautiful mistake" Rihana into the world. The child grows up seeing the unpredictability, tension, emotional upheavals and sacrifices that such families have to live through - all of which are relatable for anyone who has/had family members in the armed forces. Rihana grows up to start a similar life as her mother, going through similar life's challenges, which end up shaping her to be a very strong woman, capable of surviving the worst in a constantly changing world. Just like Pansy.

Bhaavna Arora's second novel is as much about the sadness, triumph, sacrifice and bravery of our defence forces and their families, as it is about humanity and our everyday trials and tribulations. The author, no doubt, has first hand experiences of what it's like to see your loved ones leave home on perilous duties, and live with the consequences. The disturbing political and military history of our country, wonderfully researched with vivid descriptions remind us of what this nation has been through and how there has been endless blood and tears shed over the years, so many of which we aren't even aware of. Definitely a delightful read that makes you think and ignites newfound respect for our real life heroes who ensure peace and harmony day in and day out.

The brief humorous depiction of the Bengali character didn't work for me. So that's a minor downside to this well written book.

I bought this book from amazon.
I have already read first book of the author "The Deliberate Sinner" which was really good.
Now coming back to "Mistress Of Honour",after reading the blurb i got to know that the story is based on Indian Army ...so it was lyk WHAT?? AGAIN... l already read many books similar like this.
& As it is clearly mention in the cover page that the story is inspired from the real-life stories.

I really likes some parts of the book :-
-This book reveals the hardships n sacrifices made by Indian armies and their families in order to serve our nation.
-The author has clearly shown the sacrifices made by Indian army in order to give us comfortable life by risking their own lives.
-It shows the pain and the sacrifice perfectly.
I COULD FEEL THE EMOTIONS AND WHAT WOULD BE GOING ON WITH RIHANA

After Rihana got the news of getting pregnant, She wanted to scream and weep. The only person in the whole world who could understand her problem was her mother.Pansy came and hugged her daughter & completely sympathized with her state of mind.Pansy had paid a price for the maturity. There was nothing painful for the mother than to see her daughter in such a helpless situation.

It is a gripping novel about love, longing .The plot is well built and very well narrated. I would give this book 4 stars out of 5.

I am not sure if this is indeed a different love story, but that it is written around the Armed Forces certainly makes for novelty. For a reader like me who grew up among friends and family who served in the army, parts of ‘Mistress of Honour’ were a delightful trip to the days of admiring Gentlemen Cadets shyly from behind girly eyes. The three aspects which worked for me – the camaraderie between Potnis and Shamsher, the peeps within the walls of the NDA and Bhaavna’s over-arching aim to show the universal conflict of home versus duty; a conflict alive since epics on war came into being.

There is a lacuna which some readers may find too wide to ignore. Strong women characters, let alone women in uniform, are missing in the book. Bhaavna says ‘there is always a woman at the beginning of all great things’, but apart from the privilege of procreating, sacrificing their husbands to their duties and accepting themselves as second in the scene of things, none in the book broke free from what convention demands of them, over two generations. And this is why the glorification of army wives in the title seemed like a glorification of what they “are meant to do”, in a very male-dominated book.
