365 Days with Spurgeon #1

365 Days with C H Spurgeon, Volume 1

Rate this book
A book of 365 daily devotional taken from Charles Haddon Spurgeon's earlier sermons from his New Park Street Pulpit. These have been carefully selected. Because Spurgeon treated every occasion as a unique opportunity for evangelism, an outstanding feature of these extracts is the diversity of the subjects covered, and their relevance to contemporary Christians.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.

This is Spurgeon at his best!

I spent $20 on the eBook. But I wanted to hear what God had to say from Charles Spurgeon. Even though these are summaries of his sermons they are in his words and still carry a punch. He believed in predestination and election before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4) but he also believed in converting precious souls with with all his might.

I've enjoyed having a daily dose of Spurgeon as part of my devotional time, and will continue with Volume 2 in 2017.

Whilst I do sometimes disagree with Spurgeon, more times than not, I find that he inspires and uplifts me, that he helps me to keep my focus on the cross rather than on myself. Whilst the language is dated (by about 150 years or so), I do still find it quite easy to read - almost musical at times - but this of course is what one would expect from the Great Preacher.

The "For Meditation" by Crosby, at the end of each day's Spurgeon passage, is well done and often helps to apply the passage to current times or to give further insight.

Highly recommended :)
