A Tender Exploration of Love, Duty, and the Self
Mira’s Journey of Love and Care by Shubha Apte is much more than a story about caring for an aging family member. It is an intimate exploration of what happens when love, duty, expectation, and personal identity begin to collide.
Mira’s life gradually changes after her mother-in-law is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. As caregiving becomes an increasingly central part of her world, she finds herself navigating the complicated terrain of marriage, career aspirations, family expectations, emotional exhaustion, and the guilt that so often accompanies the desire for personal space.
What stayed with me most was Apte’s understated approach. Rather than relying on dramatic confrontations, she finds emotional depth in the everyday moments—the appointments, responsibilities, compromises, expectations, and quiet sacrifices that accumulate over time. Her writing understands that caregiving is rarely one grand act of sacrifice; more often, it is a thousand small acts that can slowly reshape a person’s life.
The novel also raises an important question: Can we care deeply for others without losing ourselves in the process? Its answer is both compassionate and empowering. Self-preservation is not selfishness, and acknowledging one’s own needs does not diminish the love we have for those we care for.
A thoughtful, emotionally resonant, and deeply human read. Mira’s Journey of Love and Care will stay with readers who have experienced caregiving, family responsibilities, or the difficult balance between being there for others and remaining true to themselves.

A gentle reminder that the caregiver needs care too
Mira’s Journey of Love and Care is much more than a story about looking after an ageing parent. At its heart, it is about what happens to the person doing the caring.
Mira begins with what many people would recognise as an ordinary family life — a career, a marriage, a young child and family responsibilities. When Amma begins to develop Alzheimer's, those responsibilities gradually become something much larger. Mira becomes the person everyone turns to, and almost imperceptibly, her own needs begin moving to the bottom of the list.
That is where I found the story most affecting.
The book understands that caregiving is rarely just about practical tasks. It can involve love and frustration, devotion and exhaustion, guilt and resentment — sometimes all at the same time. And because Mira is also a wife, mother and professional, the pressure extends into every part of her life.
I particularly liked the idea at the heart of Mira's transformation: 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟.
The Indian family setting adds another layer, bringing questions of duty, expectations and relationships between generations into the story without losing sight of Mira as an individual.
This is a compassionate and emotionally accessible novel that should resonate with anyone who has been a caregiver, supported a caregiver, or simply wondered how families cope when someone they love begins to need increasing care.
A warm, thoughtful and ultimately hopeful story about love, caregiving, boundaries and finding your way back to yourself.

Some stories don't just make you turn the pages. They make you look at life a little differently.
Mira’s Journey of Love and Care is one such story for me.
Through Mira, Shubha Apte explores the reality of balancing a demanding professional life with the responsibilities of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. What I appreciated most was that the story doesn't reduce caregiving to simply giving. It explores the emotional weight behind that giving—the responsibility, exhaustion, love, resilience and the quiet moments when a caregiver may wonder, “Where am I in all of this?”
That question stayed with me.
As someone who works with people, stories and personal growth, I found the message particularly meaningful. We often teach ourselves to be strong for our families, our careers and the people who depend on us. But strength also means recognising when we need to pause, replenish and care for ourselves.
I also admire the fact that Shubha has brought a deeply human subject into fiction. Her professional understanding of leadership, transitions and human behaviour adds an interesting layer to a story that is ultimately about relationships and the choices we make when life becomes demanding. Her own reflections on caregiving and her experiences with Alzheimer’s give important context to the emotional foundation of the novel.
And perhaps that is what I carried with me after finishing the book:
Care is not only about holding someone else's hand through their difficult days. Sometimes, it is also about remembering to hold your own. ❤️
A tender, thoughtful and emotionally relevant read for anyone who has cared for—or been cared for by—someone they love.

A heartfelt story about caregiving, love and finding yourself again
Mira’s Journey of Love and Care is a deeply relatable and thoughtfully written story about what happens when caring for the people we love begins to consume our own identity.
What I particularly appreciated is that the book does not present caregiving simply as an act of sacrifice. Through Mira’s journey, it explores the emotional exhaustion, family expectations, marriage, motherhood and the difficult choices that caregivers often face—especially when a loved one is living with Alzheimer’s.
Mira’s journey of learning to ask for help, set boundaries and make space for herself is both moving and meaningful. The story gently reminds us that caring for ourselves is not selfish; in fact, it can give us the strength to continue caring for those we love.
The Indian family setting makes the story especially relatable, with its familiar mix of love, responsibility, expectations and relationships.
A touching read for anyone who has been a caregiver, has watched a loved one age, or has ever struggled to balance the needs of others with their own. The message stays with you long after you finish reading: we can love deeply without losing ourselves.
A meaningful and compassionate book that I would recommend to readers interested in family, caregiving, relationships and personal transformation.

Mira's Journey Of Love And Care: A Novel of Purpose, Hope and Transformation Through Caregiving is a poignant, necessary story about the caregiver. We pay so much attention to the one who is unwell that we overlook the toll on the one who shows up for them.
Mira is that person, a working woman with a flourishing career, a young son and a marriage she has valued. When her mother-in-law Amma begins showing signs of Alzheimer's, Mira builds a meticulous system of care. But a system is only as strong as the person holding it together, and even the strongest person feels the pressure when disaster strikes.
Encouraged by her friend Nalini, Mira turns to therapy when anxiety takes hold. The letter-writing thread in her recovery, one of my favourite practices, felt warm and true.
The book reminds us that caring for yourself is not selfish, but a necessity for caregivers. It also offers real insight into dementia's daily unpredictability.
A moving read for anyone who has ever been the one who stays.

Mira’s Journey of Love and Care by Shubha Apte is a gentle, heartfelt story that beautifully explores love, relationships, compassion and caregiving. What resonated with me most was Mira’s journey because, in my own life, I have experienced the responsibilities and emotions that come with caring for my grandparents and parents. The story made me reflect on how caregiving is not merely about responsibility—it is also about love, patience, sacrifice and being present for those who once cared for us. I connected deeply with its emotional simplicity and warmth. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book, especially to anyone who has cared for an ageing parent or grandparent. It is a touching reminder that caregiving, though sometimes demanding, can be one of the deepest and most meaningful expressions of love.

The narrative follows Mira as she navigates relational heartbreak, emotional adversity, and the long road toward self-reclamation. Rather than an idealized fairy-tale arc, it chronicles the painful reality of prioritizing everyone else at the expense of one's own identity, the breaking point that triggers change, and the deliberate daily steps required to rebuild emotional sovereignty and boundaries.
A sincere, deeply resonant recovery memoir and self-transformation story aimed at anyone rebuilding their life from the inside out after severe emotional upheaval.

Mira's Journey of Love and Care is a deeply moving story that captures the often unseen emotional journey of caregiving. Through Mira's struggles, sacrifices, and growth, Shubha Apte beautifully highlights the delicate balance between caring for loved ones and caring for oneself.
What I appreciated most was the book's compassionate message: self-care is not selfish, it is essential. Thoughtful, relatable, and emotionally authentic, this is a book that will resonate with caregivers, working professionals, and anyone navigating the responsibilities of family and life.
